Neapolitan Riviera Music
Classical

From April to October the Neapolitan Riviera provides a huge repertoire of concerts. From piano recitals and ensembles in intimate settings of ancient courtyards and churches to full orchestras playing against a background of sky, sea and historical building.

On the Amalfi coast, Ravello hosts its annual Music Festival, which includes the Wagner Festival and takes place in the breath-taking setting of Villa Rufolo Gardens and Auditorium high above the Bay. This festival lasts throughout the summer months and includes Chamber music at St. Rose Convent in Conca dei Marini town.

The concerts generally start at 21.30 pm and public transport is not available when they finish, so alternative arrangements need to be made.

La Mortella Gardens, on the island of Ischia, owned by the Sir William Walton Trust, is the venue for late afternoon and early evening recitals and concerts from April to August. These take place in the beautiful gardens and the Greco Theatre.

Another venue worthy of note is the Grand Cocumella Hotel in Sorrento which hosts 'Concerti al Cocumella'.
Evening recitals and ensembles are performed in the beautiful settings of the hotel from April to Sept.

In Naples there is of course the San Carlo Opera House offering a full programme of opera, ballet and classical concerts.

The main towns along the Amalfi Coast also organise their own music festivals throughout the summer. Sorrento holds classical concerts at four venues: the Cloister of St Franciso in Sorrento, Villa Fondi in Piano di Sorrento, Villa Angelina in Massa Lubrense and the Cathedral of Lauro in Meta di Sorrento.

Capri, Amalfi, Positano and other towns organise similar music festivals, some of which are free.

Jazz

The towns' music festivals also include jazz concerts in traditional and contemporary styles. Sorrento's Jazz Festival takes place in August.
Amalfi, Ischia, Capri and Minori, a town on the coast overlooked by Ravello, also host Jazz Festivals.

The Sorrento Jazz Tour also visits a number of venues in Sorrento Peninsula during late August.

Piano di Sorrento, just outside Sorrento, is the location of Il Gran Caffe Marianiello, a Jazz Cafe which holds regular performances.

Naples of course, as a major city, has several jazz venues and festivals.

Traditional & other music
Traditional Neapolitan Music

Traditional Neapolitan Music with traditional costumes and dancing can be enjoyed at the Teatro Tasso in the centre of Sorrento throughout the year. It provides a good introduction to the traditional music of the region.

The Capri Tango Festival takes place early June if you would like to experience this vibrant music in such a romantic and magical setting.

A number of restaurants and hotels provide their own live entertainment of course, and the newer boutique bars offer a more modern selection of background music for the younger generation. Clubs and other venues dedicated to modern music and dancing are limited, but developing.

You are never far away from this region's love for music. A cappuccino in a cafe could easily be accompanied with an impromptu performance of jazz or traditional Neapolitan ballads.
