What’s on in Durban and surrounds for the next few days (23-28 April)

Music and dance events:

1 – Rocking it Gently is on at the Rhumbelow Theatre in Cunningham Ave off Bartle Rd. The show features John Ellis, Shelley Mclean, Lloyd De Gier and Marion Loudon. Tickets are R100 and can be booked at Computicket.

2 – Rock Brittania is on until the 1st of May at The Pumpkin Theatre in Ballito. The show features music from The Beatles, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Sandy Shaw, The Hollies, Manfred Mann and some modern music from the likes of Amy Winehouse and Robbie Williams. Tickets are R230 per person.

3 – Billy’s Bar UKZN is hosting ‘Beach bands and booze’ on the 23rd of April. The cover charge is R20.00

4 – Burn Nightclub (16 Walls Ave, Greyville) presents a live alternative music showcase on the 24th April. The show features Portrait of Sound, Painting June and Chris Middleton. Tickets cost R30 before 9pm and R40 after that.

5 – The Red Door at 5 Quarry Road in Pietermaritzburg presents ‘From the Dark’ on the 24th April. The cover charge is R50.

6 – Ramazzotti & Cafe Vacca Matta bring you the very talented GoodLuck on the 25th of April. Entry is free before 6pm.

7 – The KZNPO will be performing at The Pavilion on the 25th April. There is no charge.

8 – Andre Rieu and his Johann Strauss Orchestra and many soloists will will be performing at the Durban ICC on the 28th April. They will kick off their South African tour at the Sun City Super Bowl on the 24th of April. Booking is through Computicket.

Art and cultural events:

1 – Women is a women’s festival being held at the Amphitheatre Backpackers Lodge in Northern Drakensberg from the 23rd to the 26th of April. All participants are women – artists, musicians, crafters, live bands and poetesses.

2 – After sell-out seasons in Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town and London’s West End, the hilarious South African play, Chilli Boy, is back in Durban. The show is in its 7th season and is regarded as one of the most successful plays in South African Theatre history. It is the story of an old Indian woman reincarnated as a white gangster from Boksburg. At the age of 30, the gangster starts suffering flashbacks from his previous life as an Indian woman. I haven’t seen this show but it sounds like it’s awesome. The show is being held at the
Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre, Howard College, UKZN from the 22nd of April to the 9th of May. Tickets cost R55 per person.

3 – The St Petersburg Male Ballet Company will be hosting a performance ath The Playhouse Drama Theatre from the 24th of April till the 23rd of May.

Lifestyle events:

1 – Don’t forget to check out the Essenwood market every Saturday in Musgrave.

2 – Moyo Ushaka is celebrating Ghana this month.

3 – The Golden Hours family market is held every Saturday in Uitsig Road, Durban North. There are a variety of stalls for you to check out.

4 – The Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) in Yellowwood Park (15A Coedmore Avenue) hosts an open day every last Sunday of the month. Entry is R20 per person.

5 – Stables Wine Estate (Nottinghan Road, Natal Midlands) is hosting its annual Grape Crushing Festival on the 25th of April.

6 – The Pagan Freedom Day is being held at The Hacienda in Monteseel on the 27th of April. It is a craft market selling Pagan, Esoteric & Wiccan goods. There will be Reiki, Reflexology and other healers there and a circle for Planetary Peace will be held. There will also be dance performances by Kalaya’s Dance Studio and an NIA dance demonstration. All this and lots more. The cost is R20.
