The Hammersley Collection

Comprising 21 Mutual Chess Circle Magazines dating from January 1946 to April 1951, the Collection gives us a contemporary view of the Club following World War 2. We get to know more about several individual members, including the Club's founder, through the 'Mutual Portrait Gallery' - where a 'picture' of one member is penned by another. An illuminating series of articles by Tom Bladon gives an account of  'Birmingham League History' -  starting with its formation back in 1897. (Stage 1 is in Magazine No. 4, Stage 2 in No. 6, Stage 3 in No. 7, Stage 5 in No. 8,  - Stage 4 is missing). And there's much else besides!

The original owner of the Magazines was C R Cull.

For the gift to the club of all 21 Magazines, the Mutual is greatly indebted to

Colin Hammersley

The collection may well have been split up were it not for Colin's prompt action in purchasing it through the internet. His subsequent generosity in presenting the entire Collection to us is gratefully acknowledged.

Each of the Magazines may be viewed complete by clicking a link below. Welcome to the past!
