Honey Recipes: Nigella’s Honey Bee Cake

It’s hard not to giggle like a schoolgirl at a chocolate cake covered in marzipan honeybees.

This weekend, my friend Alexis converted a cup of our honey into this tasty cake, every bit as sumptuous as it looks. Paired with mimosas on her back porch, it was the icing on a perfect late summer weekend.

Hello, Mistress Beek! We are backyard beekeepers in Portland, Oregon – and we too have bees in various backyards besides our own. Have you seen Queen of the Sun” yet? It’s a beautiful film about bees worldwide, made by the same person who made “The Real Dirt on Farmer John.”

Our spring and summer have really been hard on everyone’s bees here in the Willamette valley, at least in terms of the pollen and honey they’ve been able to pack away. Still, our colonies are pretty vigorous at this point. Our main aim is to keep them healthy (we don’t use chemicals). And we pray for a better spring and summer next year…

thanks, from Pam and Paul in Portland, Oregon – where we hope that bees are the next chickens!

Hiya Pam & Paul, thanks for stopping by!

Actually, I haven’t seen the film you mention but will add it to the list. Appreciate the recommendation.

I’m sorry to hear you’ve had a challenging summer but I’m with you — better to back off on harvesting rather than treat the hive with chemicals. Keep me posted on your results next spring!
