New Jersey Vehicle Transport Companies - Auto Transport to NJ

Choosing vehicle transport companies is the way to ship cars to New Jersey

Hands-down, if your car shipping needs involve international auto transport or simply choosing between the D-I-Y option and car shipping companies, you'll find the latter is the smarter move. Think about it: you've the title, emissions and registration to think about, as well as all the other organizational needs involved in relocation - surely worrying about driving your car on unfamiliar Jersey freeways should be the last thing on your plate!

International Auto Transport Into New Jersey

With the convenience of one of the most well-developed ports in the country, the New Jersey Port system makes international auto transport a cinch. New York and New Jersey share the Port Authority duties in the Upper New York Bay area, and provide a fantastic way of shuttling passengers conveniently from the ports to various light rail depots, listed below. This light rail system is called "PATH" - and boasts the following stations between Manhattan and Newark, NJ:

  • Newark, with connections to Amtrak and NJ Transit rail/bus system as well as private bus lines
  • Harrison
  • Journal Square
  • Grove Street
  • Exchange Place
  • Pavonia/Newport
  • Hoboken
  • WTC
  • 33rd Street
  • 23rd Street
  • 14th Street
  • 9th Street
  • Christopher Street

For more information on PATH such as scheduling and accessibility, visit: www.panynj.gov/path/index.html

The light rail system makes navigating the port fairly simple, and using vehicle transport companies to handle getting your car to and fro will make your transition that much easier. Do note that you will have to address customs and duties if you're shipping internationally from Canada or abroad. Be sure to have all your necessary paperwork (anything that proves the car(s) is your property and is currently registered and insured) with you. You will need to provide the bill of lading, bill of sale, registration and insurance as well as permission from the EPA that the vehicle(s) meets smog requirements. If the car(s) is of fairly recent build - 10-15 years or less - then there shouldn't be a problem. This needs to be addressed weeks, if not months, before the move - plan ahead to avoid delays. What Car Shipping Companies Won't Do

That being said, there are certain things the vehicle transport companies won't handle, such as titling, registering and getting emissions tests performed on your car. If only life were that simple!

The NJ Motor Vehicles isn't exactly Disneyland, but at the same time they've made access to their system pretty simple. Visit their website for more information:

    Or call: 1-877-DMV-NJ4U (368-6548) 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Motorists are required, as in most states, to carry certain liability insurance minimums, pass emissions tests and possibly have maintenance to do so, and to have the vehicle titled and licensed in New Jersey. Here are a few points to new licensees to NJ, excerpted from the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission site:

  • A motorist with a valid out-of-state license who moves to New Jersey must apply for a New Jersey license within 60 days (commercial driver license - CDL - within 30 days) or before the current license expires, whichever is sooner. The out-of state license must be surrendered prior to receiving a New Jersey license. (N.J.S.A. 39:3-17.1, 39:3-10.17, 39:5D-5)
  • A motorist who is a foreign national with a valid license from another country may be eligible for a New Jersey driver license. If the motorist receives a New Jersey license, he/she will not have to surrender the out-of-country license.
  • All applicants for a New Jersey driver license must provide a full name, current address, Social Security number, 6 Points of ID Verification and other documentation that verifies that his/her legal presence in the United States is authorized under federal law. Documents must be in English or have an approved translation. (N.J.S.A. 39:3-9a, 39:3-9b, 39:3-10 and N.J.A.C. 13:21-1.1, 13:21-1.2, 13:21-1.3, 13:21-8.2)

With all of the seeming hassles and red tape, having your car shipped to NJ will most likely be the cheapest route to take, and the most convenient. Buying a new car at the time of relocation isn't the best financial decision per se: the costs of buying or renting a new home or apartment and all of the other costs associated with moving point in one direction: let the pro's take a load off your mind and handle your vehicle shipment for you. You'll be glad you did.
