Annual Travel Insurance Information

Annual travel insurance is available from B Portwood & Co Ltd. We offer a range of annual travel insurance policies, so there is a good chance that we can provide a policy that meets your needs for annual travel insurance.

Areas

Annual travel insurance policies are rated on the areas (as opposed to the country) to which you may be going. There are traditionally 3 (some companies offer a UK only option)

Europe: Note that 'Europe' may be defined differently by different insurers. Whilst all will include mainland Europe West of the Urals, some will include African Countries bordering the Mediterranean and some will even include Israel.
Worldwide Excluding USA. This is a misnomer as most companies will also exclude travel to Canada and the Caribbean under this area (and maybe Mexico).
Worldwide Including USA. The widest cover.

Notwithstanding the above, policies will exclude travel to areas where the FCO has recommended all travel be cancelled. You may increase cover mid-term from one area to a wider area but will have to pay the full premium difference.

Independent Travel

Will your annual travel insurance include your family? If so you should check to see if a) your children are covered (usually it is under 18 or under 23 if still at Uni) and b) do you need them to be able to travel on their own or will they only travel with you? Winter Sports

If your annual travel insurance does not need winter sports cover then you may be able to save some money. Conversely, if you need winter sports cover, check that the total number of days cover given is adequate (some policies give unlimited cover) and also that the types of winter sports you intend to do are covered under the annual travel insurance policy.

Length Per Trip

An annual travel insurance policy lasts for a year and usually covers any number of trips (some policies will restrict the total days away to 182). There will be a limit on the length of each trip (otherwise the policy could be abused), usually 30, 45, 60 or 90 days.

Inception date

You should start your annual travel insurance policy immediately (or when your previous policy expires) rather than on the date for your first holiday. The reason is as follows: for a single trip policy cancellation cover starts as soon as the policy commences, even if the holiday is not for a few weeks or months. (We have discounts available if you call us and your trip is in the very near future). However for an annual travel insurance policy, cancellation cover does not start until the inception date of the policy. We had a case where a client arranged an annual policy to start in February (date of trip) even though it was November. In January there was an accident and they could not travel. Sorry - no claim possible.

The elderly - over 65
