Fledge Watch – Yvonne Wayland June 21 4:30 – 9:00PM

Sorry this is so late. I had a late start and there was so much information for me to sort in my little brain. Hope you can understand it!

I arrived at about 4:30 and found Carol P. and Dana watching Sacajawea still clinging to the South side of the Tower. The high winds were a concern as she would make adjustments. I was afraid she would get swept away.

Not until about 5:45 did she take off and found the ledge of the North side of the tower on the 17 floor. She would walk and flap her wings. Mariah seemed to be trying to get to her but the winds were strong and it appeared she was having a tough time getting in between the buildings . Sacajawea continued to walk along the ledge and at one point found food. She finally got to the west corner and disappeared out of sight. We all scrambled. By now so many watchers had arrived, we had it covered :).

I went north of the building to see if I could see her and stayed for about 20 minutes when I spotted Mariah flying and a juvie following her. I hurried back to the parking lot where I was informed Ananta was on the High Falls stack catwalk and Sacajawea had landed on the Purple building across from the Kodak building. They stayed in place for quite a while.

Next Ananta flew to the tower, clinging to a small edge on the South side at the 15th floor right above the windows. After a short rest she headed back to the stacks and after a couple of attempts she landed on the catwalk on the east side, (toward the gorge).

At about 7:15 Mariah joins Ananta. Kaver finally arrives at the Tower. He had headed Downtown earlier and poor Mariah has had to deal with these wondering kids on her own. Sacajawea still on the purple building, pacing and flapping finally drops down to the roof of the building where she can’t be seen, everyone scrambles to get her in sight.

In the mean time Mariah moves to the middle stack without Ananta. Next Sacajawea leaves the purple building and ends up clinging to the North stack then takes off and makes a beautiful landing on the lower roof of the front bridge tower, that is a connection of the building, just above the entrance. Mariah is flying trying to watch these girls .

Kaver brings food for the girls in the playpen.

We get a few minutes to catch our breath and Sacajawea starts to move to the next section of the building heading south, stays awhile but then takes off, out of sight, and everyone scambles, heading over toward Frontier Field but the roof of the building is so large she can’t be seen.

She stays out of sight just long enough to keep everyone worried then returns and make a perfect landing on the 15th floor ledge. Mariah joined her for a bit and Sacajawea seemed to settle in for the night.

Back to Ananta….Mariah flies back to the Northern Stack and after a few minutes Ananta joins her with a perfect landing on the catwalk and settles for a while next to her. It’s starting to get dark and we were thinking this will be it for the night. Ananta decides to head for the tower. She just misses the roof of the northern building and clings to the edge, but works her way up. She was pacing and flapping and after a few minutes heads back to the Northern stack and makes a strong landing and again settles next to Mariah. Several of the watchers hung around for another half hour or so to see if all was well for the night,
Apparently it was and it was time to head home.

Whew….what and exciting fledge watch for me.

Great report, Yvonne – it wasn’t easy to keep track of everything last night, so it was good to read your report and get it all straight ;->
