New Wildlife haven is attracting endangered birds

An important area of farmland and foreshore at Yelland has been turned into a haven for birds and wildlife. Extensive conservation work on more than 200 acres at Home Farm Yelland have created an attractive site for birds and wildlife. The farm is now being hailed as a remarkable example of sustainable farming, at the same time providing valuable habitat that has seen a significant increase in bird life , particularly in the newly created wet areas. Over the last three years the Gaia Trust who own the site have made many improvements , like digging scrapes and ponds together with sympathetic management of hedge banks and creating more pasture land and salt marshes. Two hectares have been especially planted with species that birds love, like sunflowers and quinoa. The official opening of Home Farm Marsh was performed by Devon County Councillor Rodney Cann who said “ This is a example of what can be achieved to provide sustainable farming along side  a major conservation program” The public will be able to visit the area and use a circular track to view the birds and habitats.  The track has been constructed with banks to conceal walkers to minimise disturbance ,but still enabling visitors a good view of the birds and wild life.

Every little helps! The photos show the Borrowers lending Rodney a hand to recycling when taking a break from performing at the Queens Theatre ,Barnstaple.

Local have people have taken to recycling in a big way. North Devon has already exceeded its Government set target to recycling 30% of its rubbish. It is only six months since the roll out of the Green Wheelie bins to many parts of the area, but already we are recycling something like 35% of our rubbish. A big thank you to all our recyclers .
