Excellent work! I had no idea about the context of this verse, and always thought the Quran was explicit in preventing relationships with non-Muslims. Even seen this verse used to say why Muslims should not live in non-Muslim countries!

    Thanks for clearing this up.

    • Farah, curiosity got the better of me when someone forwarded me this verse (and just ONE verse) that we Muslims should not have non-Muslim friends. Then I did my research and found that even without knowing the context, verses 8-9 are pretty clear and logical about when to be friends and when not to be friends with non-Muslims. I hate it when people go verse-shopping and pickout one verse to support their view without knowing the context and/or the other verses surrounding that verse.

  7. I had a so-called religious brother with much dua in his toungue tell me once the Prophet had no legacy, and it is the Quran alone Muslims need. Those who are ready to eliminate the Prophet from their lives cannot understand the context of the Quran, and therefore will not understand their Creator. And will never understand whom and why God loves most. The Prophet is al-Mustafa, God’s Chosen One. Fethullah Gulen from Turkey stated “there is no need for Muhammed” and he is an avid interfaith-dialogue supporter. But without him, the Prophet, we wouldn’t even know how to pray, and we wouldn’t be able to love God as God wills, and so we are dependent on him. Thank you for your efforts.
Ps. I just found and subbed to your twitter.

    • Exactly Sara. There’s no mention of 5 times prayer or rakah information in the Quran… we need the hadith and the context to find truly understand the Quran. Quran is like a telegram – short and to the point – with the Prophet sent to explain the Quran. Thank you for your comments.
