Bennie Boat Beached
The Bennie Boat from the Glasgow Humane Society shored up at the Museum of Transport several weeks ago. It is now in the process of being dried out slowly, monitored on a daily basis by Riverside Project conservator Gretel Evans. Of the handheld instruments Gretel uses, one monitors the temperature and relative humidity of the space storing the boat, whilst the other gives a moisture content reading of the boat. Once deemed suitably dry the boat will be shipped to the conservation lab for cleaning and stabilisation. Once conservation is complete all will be ship shape and Bristol fashion!

Hi, thanks for your question.
The Bennie is named after its builder, Ben Parsonage, the former Officer of the Glasgow Humane Society. Ben built the boat in the 1950s. In keeping with the tradition of naming the boat after the Glasgow Humane Society’s current officer, it was named Bennie. The boat, and the story of Ben and the GHS, will feature in the Riverside Museum when it opens in 2011.
