 What is POP3?

Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) is a standard mail protocol used to receive emails from a remote server to a local email client. POP3 allows you to download email messages on your local computer and read them even when you are offline.

 What is IMAP?

The Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) is a mail protocol used for accessing email on a remote web server from a local client. IMAP and POP3 are the two most commonly used Internet mail protocols for retrieving emails. Both protocols are supported by all modern email clients and web servers.

What is the main difference between IMAP and POP3?

The POP3 protocol assumes that there is only one client connected to the mailbox. In contrast, the IMAP protocol allows simultaneous access by multiple clients. IMAP is suitable for you if your mailbox is about to be managed by multiple users.

 What is SMTP?

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is the standard protocol for sending emails across the Internet. SMTP uses TCP port 25 or 2525 and sometimes you can have problems to send your messages in case your ISP has closed port 25 (How to check if port 25 is open?). To determine the SMTP server for a given domain name, the MX (Mail eXchange) DNS record is used.

Do you support MAPI?

Yeas, we do! MAPI (Messaging Application Programming Interface) was designed for MS Exchange server and used by Microsoft Outlook from first version: Outlook 97. For using all features of Outlook 97-Outlook XP users need to use MAPI, but this requires local network or VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection to server. We provides VPN connection as option. For users of Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007 we have alternative way to use all features of latest versions of this program HTTPS RPC.

What is HTTPS RPC?

Exchange Server 2003 enabled users to use the Windows RPC over HTTP Proxy component to access their Exchange information from the Internet. This technology wraps remote procedure calls (RPCs) with an HTTP layer. This allows the traffic to traverse network firewalls without requiring RPC ports to be opened.

How to setup Outlook 2003?

If you are using Microsoft® Office Outlook® 2003, you can connect to the computer running Windows® Small Business Server through the Internet using the feature called RPC over HTTP. This means you can remotely access your server e-mail account from the Internet when you are working outside your organization's firewall. You do not need security-related hardware or software (such as smart cards or security tokens), and you do not have to establish a virtual private network (VPN) connection to the server.

Comparing RPC over HTTP and Outlook Web Access

When using RPC over HTTP to access your mailbox, you get the full functionality of Outlook 2003. For example, you can work offline, use Microsoft Office Word 2003 as your e-mail editor, and easily organize your mailbox.
