Garden of the Gods

The wilderness that is Garden of the Gods is part of the Shawnee National Forest in Saline County, Ill., 20 miles southeast of Harrisburg.

"Primitive" and "natural" are the words most associated with the Illinois gardens.

As several Web sites say, the wilderness area is a couple of hundred million years old and covers more than 3,300 acres of forest. The surface rock in this area is more than four miles deep, and the fractured bedrock has created a number of interesting rock formations.

Camping and hiking are the main year-round activities motorized vehicles aren't allowed, and camping areas don't have electricity.

Most nature and photography lovers revel in the unspoiled natural beauty surrounding them.

Formations such as Camel Rock, Anvil Rock and Devil's Smoke Stack are geologic wonders and have been a siren's call for nature lovers.

Visitors can enjoy one of the grandest views while having lunch at the High Knob Lookout picnic area.
