Southeast New Mexico's history was formed by the Lincoln County War, a conflict between two factions that was frought with both loyalties and political reasons. A colorful character involved in the Lincoln County War was Willian Bonney a/k/a Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett, sheriff of Lincoln County.
