Soundtrack to a Wedding

Today is our two month anniversary.  It’s been a wonderful two months and I could not be any happier.  So, to celebrate, I’m posting the music that made our wedding.  Music is a huge part of Kristen and my relationship.  Our first “date” consisted of coffee and the exchange of mix CD’s.  I’ve made her about 15 since then and we’ve been to shows together and have enjoyed introducing each other to new music.  So we wanted music to be a large part of our wedding experience.

There were 3 playlists made for the wedding, even though only one actually got used.  Music during the ceremony did not work out, but it ended up being better that way.  So I figured I’d share the playlists here so that they actually do see the light of day, beyond the limited exposure that they got.

The first playlist was called “Not Rehearsal” (I know, original title…).  We had a Mexican dinner gathering, but since there was really no wedding party we did not need a rehearsal.  Unfortunately there was no way to play this playlist at the beach house where my family and I were staying, so this playlist never saw the light of day.  The best way I can describe it is “cool background music”.  This playlist was heavy on Jazz, Reggae, and Singer/Songwriter, with some other lighter stuff mixed in.

So there’s that.  Then, there was another playlist that actually made it onto CD’s that we were supposed to give out at the wedding but we never really discussed a good distribution plan and other things took precedent and I ended up giving my mother a full spindle of CD’s saying “Here, pass these out to friends and family that are still around tomorrow” as we left on our premoon (that’s the weekend honeymoon for those keeping score at home…another one to come soon, a full week honeymoon).  So this one is called Toes in the Sand and it reflects Kristen and I and what we’d listen to together at the beach during a beautiful sunset with our shoes off.  I do know that this one made it out to CA where my uncle David has been listening to it in the house and impressing his daughters with his awesome music taste…

And then, there is the total masterpiece, the one I consider the best mix I’ve ever made, which is saying something since I’ve made dozens and dozens in my life.  This one was played at the reception and was enjoyed by all of our guests.  The idea was to get songs that were known and new, fun and upbeat, but not distracting.  There is some old stuff here, some classic stuff, some unexpected stuff, and some dancy stuff.  All in all, just a great mix.  I give you Cupcakes and Salsa.

There is a little overlap between the playlists and you probably noticed that Sweet Thing by Van Morrison made all three lists, but that’s because it is our song and we just had to have it as much as possible.   And I chose the name Cupcakes and Salsa because that is what we ate at the reception.  It’s us and so are these songs.  So enjoy our wedding soundtrack and feel free to use some for your own.
