Renee van der Stelt

This is a photograph taken from an ongoing series of images of a tree at the base of our property in Maryland.  After a year, it has become apparent that what is most interesting is the recording of light and atmosphere, and the thoughts that follow through contemplation of the great degree of variation within each image. One morning the tree is obliterated by fog, another day it stands in blue haze, another day it is laced behind white raindrops, or is literally sits at the end of a rainbow, or shakes out clouds of pollen in the wind.  Everything changes, even when standing still.  The comparison of light and atmosphere, and the inherent pastoral beauty within the image is not what interests me most… it is rather that through photographing this tree, there is a deliberate, daily reminder of how everything can look the same on the surface, but it is always different.
