China-UK Sustainable Agriculture Innovation Network (SAIN) Working Group Co-chairs¨ Meeting 23-26 March, 2009 The first joint working group (WG) co-chairs meeting was held at the University of East Anglia (UEA) and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affair (Defra) on 23-26th March 2009. The purpose of the meeting was for co-chairs to review and revise each group¨s research proposal and to plan the work for next stage. This meeting also provided an opportunity for working group co-chairs to clarify synergies, discuss cross group issues, as well as communicate with other SAIN members and policy makers in Defra, Dfid and industrial sectors. At the meeting in UEA, co-chairs discussed and revised each working group¨s priority research activities, implementation plan and resource requirement. The proposed research activities included review and gap analysis, policy briefing, tool/methodology development to technology development and demonstration. The co-chairs agreed a phased implementation plan start with review and gap analysis. In the afternoon of 26th March, a wash-up meeting was held in Defra. Prof Bob Watson, Prof Gordon Conway, Jeremy Eppel and other Defra and DFID officials attended the meeting and commented on working groups¨ research plans. Prior to this co-chairs meeting, Prof Li Shizhong, member of WG2 met with Dr Jeremy Woods, Prof David Norse and Dr Yuelai Lu on 20th March in London, discussed research plan of WG2.
