The Matt Savage Trio returns to The Today Show

June 23, 2003

The Matt Savage Trio went to New York again on June 23rd, 2003 to make their second appearance on The TODAY Show.  It has been a year since their last visit.

This was a very special appearance.  On this day, Matt was publicly announced as having been signed as an artist by BÖSENDORFER pianos, the Rolls-Royce of pianos.  These pianos have been the piano of choice for great pianists for the past 175 years.  In fact, the company is this year celebrating its 175-year anniversary.  Artists who have chosen BÖSENDORFER as their piano include Franz Liszt, Victor Borge, Sir André Previn, András Schiff, Yoshko Kishno, Fazil Say, Oscar Peterson, Lionel Richie, Diana Krall, Tori Amos, Dianne Reeves, and MANY other greats.

Matt is the youngest artist and only child to have become a BÖSENDORFER artist.  He is very proud of this accomplishment, and LOVES the pianos!  He was actually signed on September 9, 2002 at the age of 10 years, 4 months.  Details were taken care of, publicity photos were taken, and Matt was supposed to have been given his certificate on the TODAY Show in March of 2003.  However, as we all know, day-to-day life was put on hold for a while as we fought in Iraq.  So, although it took time to re-schedule Matt’s appearance and we needed to wait to announce Matt’s accomplishment, it was worth the wait.  We wished The TODAY Show to have the honor of announcing this special event in Matt’s musical journey, as they have been so wonderful to us.

Before the band performed, The TODAY Show showed a short film of the Trio performing in concert… including footage from their visit to Singapore.  Then Katie Couric sat down on the piano bench with Matt and spoke with him about how things were going.  She next pulled out a beautifully framed certificate from BÖSENDORFER congratulating Matt on becoming the youngest artist and only child to have been signed by them in their 175-year history.  Matt beamed.  Katie spoke with Matt a bit more, and then said she’d love to hear the band play.  So, the Trio broke into “Firecracker”, an original tune by Matt that is on the Trio’s latest CD, “Chasing Your Tail”.  Of course, Matt was playing a beautiful BÖSENDORFER piano supplied by BOSENDORFER NEW YORK.  They played flawlessly, and the studio crowd cheered.  Katie gave Matt a hug, and Matt hugged her back, although a bit bashfully.  He is, after all, among the millions of teenagers and men around the world who think Katie is gorgeous.

Mom took a few photos (of course), and Matt Lauer and Matt Savage got a chuckle that I wanted to take a photo with “The two Matts”.  The TODAY Show folks are all SO  wonderful…ALL of them.  And Katie and Matt Lauer and Barbara Simon (the producer of the segment) deserve our thanks for making us feel like old friends returning to visit.

Everyone had a wonderful time, and Matt is very proud of his becoming a piano artist for BÖSENDORFER.  We visited with friends in Long Island that evening and returned to Boston the next day.

On a short side note, some of the guests on the show that day were Demi Moore (who is gorgeous) and Stephen King (whom we happen to already know through family members who are his neighbors).  Stephen King looked and sounded terrific, which was great to see after his long ordeal recovering from his terrible automobile accident.
