Smells Like Teen Spirit

Our friend Kelli works at Seventeen, and she recently challenged us to come up with a Swatchbook for a teen girl’s room.  We did some research on their site – they’ve got a “Bedroom Battle” feature where you get to rate fellow readers’ rooms – and the main thing we got out of it was: girls love color. Specifically pink! So that is obviously our base color for this palette. But the challenge with your high school room is that you want it to grow up with you. So we toned down the color a bit, added some accents in blues and greys (with a pop of red to keep it lively), and – voila! – a color scheme that’s young and fun, but not so crazy you’ll hate it six months from now. Hat Trick

Here’s a neat idea: a poppy modern coat rack, disguised as a floor lamp. It looks like part of the decor when not in use (because who wants to stare at a naked coat tree?), but the hidden hooks inside the shade will keep outerware neat and tidy when your friends come over. (-Moe)

N.A.L. coat tree, $99.95, CB2.

On the Move!

This Saturday I’ll be making my way across country in a one-way RV. After a two-week journey checking out the best eats, drinks and shops along the southern route — Nashville to New Orleans to Austin to Tucson to San Francisco — I’ll go from being a New Yorker to a Seattleite (and I couldn’t be more excited)! During my trip I’ll be taking a brief hiatus from posting so that I can fully enjoy my trip, but Moe will continue wowing you with her fabulous finds and we’ll be introducing a guest blogger to help pick up my slack! (More on that soon…) In the meantime, I figured this would be the most appropriate Daily Obsession to send me off on my one-way trip to Seattle… See you in a couple weeks! (-Allie)

P.S. If anyone has tips on places to eat/drink/visit — including amazing thrift shops — along my route, please let me know (leave a comment here). Thanks!

You bet your rain boots I’ll be buying this print for my new apartment in the Emerald City. Bright color and words of optimism — might not make the rain actually disappear in the rainy season, but it’ll at least help lift my spirits!

Rain Drops 18×24″ Poster, $30 ($60 framed), deedee914 on Etsy.

Nice Pad

As you’re well aware by now, I’m a great lover of stationery – and that extends to pretty desk accessories, like this set by Michael Devine. Because who doesn’t aspire to be the sort of woman who has a perfectly fashionable, coordinated office? (-Moe)

Bagatelle Chocolate Pad & Pen Holder set, $75, Michael Devine Home.

It’s Grate!

I have to admit, there’s been quite the overkill of animal decor this past year. I’ve been trying to fight the trend…but there’s just so much cute animal-themed stuff out there. Check out this tortoise cheese grater for instance. When not in use, it’s a cute little piece of artwork for your kitchen wall. (-Allie)

Tortoise Grater, $32, Tortoise General Store

Under the Sea

Okay, I know this one is a little strange, but isn’t this octopus lamp appealing? I just think the little critter would be a nice companion when you’re working at your desk. (-Moe)

Turquoise Mix-Up

If you’re a consistent reader (hi Mom) then you’re highly familiar with this turquoise sofa by now. Because it’s a relative splurge as far as sofas are concerned, I wanted to show its design versatility (i.e. the ability to redecorate again and again around this staple item and truly get your money’s worth) so I’ve compiled two looks so far (dark/modern and vintage/romance)

Turquoise Sofa, $2,98.90, Neiman Marcus

Dash & Albert Aquinnah Woven Cotton rug, 6×9’, $194

Driftwood mirror, $199, Crate & Barrel

Ribbon Stool, $319, High Fashion Home

Optic Sea Glass Table Lamp, $89.95, Crate  Barrel

Mum 18” pillow, $119, Room & Board

I’m always looking for pretty ways to keep my jewelry organized, especially my rings (I have a ring problem). This ceramic hand serves as both functional jewelry holder and pretty desktop sculpture. (-Allie)

Mood Indigo

Doesn’t this rug feel luxurious? The color is so rich and the pattern just spreads so generously out from the corners. Tag this one for my future perfect grown-up home. (-Moe)

Personal Plate Trainer

Need a little help with your New Year’s resolution? Next time you reach for that extra slice of pizza these plates might help motivate you to put it back and head out for a run. The dinner plate has the following sarcastic words of motivation:

“Do you really need that second helping? … It’s hard to be around you when you eat like this … Please stop eating. We’re worried about you … For the love of god stop eating.” So eat up! Or not… (-Allie)

Worrisome Side Plate, $9.95 and Worrisome Dinner Plate, $14.95 at Fishs Eddy.
