Volunteering

BMS SOC is involved with several volunteering projects and is hoping to expand these over the coming year. We are involved in schemes alongside SheffieldVolunteering – an organisation run by the Union to connect volunteers with opportunities in the community, as well as our own projects. Volunteering in the community is a good way to get involved with people outside of the university environment, and will also help boost your CV or applications for further study.

We have looked into a few volunteering projects that students might be interested in. We will go forward with organising any one (or more) of the following projects, based on the show of interest, so please email mda08oo@shef.ac.uk if you are interested in any of these or need more information!

-Sunday Centre
This is on Sundays from 1-30pm to 4-30pm, it has been organised to provide support  for the homeless. At Victoria Halls oppposite the Crucible theatre.

Saturday Playgroup
Once a fortnight from 9.30am to 2.00pm this is a playgroup for children with autism and other disabilities, aged 4-9. Play with them in the nursery and take them on trips.

-British Red Cross

Training students in very basic first aid and presentation skills, who then teach first aid skills to other students, who they or British Red Cross find. There are numerous other services you can participate in.

-St’ Lukes Hospice

This will involve helping in ward kitchens, serving tea, working at the charity shops, sewing, arranging flowers, working on reception etc.

Let us know as soon as possible  if you are interested in participating in any of the projects so  that we can get them up and running, volunteering with your society will be a great way to meet new people across all years as well as helping others!
Thankyou!
