God’s In Charge. He’s In Control.

This is part 4 in our series on Romans 8:28: “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”

Today we’ll explore how God causes all things to work.

God has a plan. He knew His intentions for each of us before He created the earth. His story of creation in Genesis reveals His creative power and His plan for all mankind. Did He give up when Adam and Eve sinned? No. He knew they would. He set in motion the rest of civilization after man’s fall. He has been in control of events and history since before the foundations of the earth. He set in motion His plan for the rest of time and beyond for Eternity.

His plan will never be thwarted, despite all Satan’s efforts. He will fulfill every promise to us He has ever made (many of them have been already). He will guide us, protect us, and work in and through us to bring Him glory. As we read  God’s Word we see evidence of His control, power and influence throughout the world He has created.

We find plenty of occasions in God’s Word when God either told of His preeminence or displayed His preeminence in the lives of His people.

Paul gives us a vivid description of God’s preeminence in Colossians: “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.” Colossians 1:16-20.

Paul is describing Jesus in these verses, but we know that talking about Jesus is the same as talking about God and the Holy Spirit. They are all one in the same.

Isaiah 41:10 declares, “Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” In Isaiah 43 God says, “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by name; you are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, nor will the flame burn you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. Verses 1-3.

God has created us.  His children are precious in His sight, and He will never leave us or forsake us.

In the book of Exodus when the Israelites crossed the Red Sea, God displayed his control and his preeminence. In 13:21-22, “The Lord was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead them on the (His) way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night. He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.”

Further in Exodus God used the Egyptians to bring glory to Himself and display His might, power and control before His people. “Thus the Lord saved Israel that day from the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. When Israel saw the great power which the Lord had used against the Egyptians, the people feared (revered and respected with awe and wonder) the Lord, and they believed in the Lord. Exodus 14:30-31.

The more we read and study God’s Word, the more we understand His preeminence and His control of people and events around the world. Can this devotional convince you? No. Can a pastor’s sermon convince you? No.  The only One who can convince you of His preeminance is God Himself. And He will do it as you pray, read and study His Word and meditate on it daily.
