What is that quote, anyway?

After quite a bit of searching, I'm unable to find exactly what the quote is or exactly who said it... in fact, there are three variants... "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler."
-- Albert Einstein
That's quoted at http://www.public.iastate.edu/~physics/sci.physics/faq/occam.html and at gopher://gopher.ainet.com:70/00/Misc/Quotations/author.collections/Einstein

"Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler."
-Gregory Singleton
Who's this "Gregory Singleton" person? I have no idea, but he's credited with this bon mot at http://www.fifer.net/quotes/ and at http://www.cs.pvamu.edu/~jmartin/quotes.htm

And this one? Much weaker, I think... "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not one bit simpler."
-- Albert Einstein
