St. Fiacre Patron Saint of the garden

Saint Fiacre - the patron saint of the gardeners

Saint Fiacre was born in Ireland in the late 6th century. Ireland at the time had no cities or towns and was made up of scattered settlements and clans called "tuaths". Saint Fiacre's father was a king and warrior of a peaceful tuath. As a child Fiacre was schooled in a monastery where he learned art, astronomy, grammar, Latin, law, mathematics, and poetry.

The monks were healers as well as teachers and young Fiacre worked in the fields learning herbs and gardening. After Fiacre's mother died and his father began Fiacre's training to become a worrior, Fiacre left home and traveled south for a more peaceful and religious way of life. In a wooded area near the Nore River he established a hermitage. Some years later after his feeding the hungry and healing the sick he felt he needed to move north and establish another hermitage. This was his longing for silence and to again be one with nature.

Saint Fiacre eventualy moved to France where the Bishop gave him land and he established a monastery with a chapel and many gardens. Saint Fiacre died about 670 and in the 11th and 12th centuries the gardeners and farmers chose him as their protector, or patron saint.

The Garden Bench Girl

This wonderful little girl sits on a bench of her own. She wears a summer dress with short sleves and lace. Her innocent face reminds you of a sweet cherub. Her sun bonnet is turned up ever so slightly to give her smile great prescence.

Our little girl sits on the bench with her legs dangling over the edge of the bench and just slightly off the ground. In her right hand is a basket in which you may place flowers or a pot. Her mary jane shoes with slightly rolled down socks give her an air of times gone by.

The bench is 25 inches long, 8 inches wide and 8 inches high. The little girl when placed on the bench sits 26 inches high. Price $110.00 plus tax, S/H.

EXCLUSIVE TO THE SOUTHERN HOTEL

HAND PAINTED NUTCRACKERS

Our gift shop also offers unique one of a kind nutcrackers. These are hand painted and designed to enhance any collection of this wonderful holiday folk art.

A tradition was born in 1992 when we decorated the Southern Hotel for Christmas with a Nutcracker theme.....In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite".

Barbara decorated a great many Nutcrackers as part of the theme. She enjoyed doing them so much, and sharing them with people. She has continued painting these special decorations. Some of the most special ones are done as a series, but never more than 12.

If you care to see any of them you must come to the Southern Hotel Gift Shop. The Nutcrackers range in size from 12, 14, 18, 20, 24 and 36 inches.

Our most special "Crackers" are previewed at our "Nutcracker Tea", always held the Sunday afternoon after Thanksgiving (November 26th). Let us know (by e-mail) if you would like to recieve an invitation.
