Cairns began as Trinity Bay, named in 1770 by Captain James Cook. His survey of northern Queensland would see the establishment of an Australian tourist destination. This tourist destination would have unparalleled natural features and world-class hospitality.

Cairns first attracted international attention thanks to the gold rush of the late 1800's. Sugar cane and timber milling provided long-term jobs and prosperity for the international workforce that had made Cairns their home. Irish, Chinese and Australian-born workers were also employed in building the Cairns railway, which allowed many inland townships to develop.
Cairns became a city in 1923, named after William Wellington Cairns, the then governor of Queensland. Local industries began to flourish, including brewing, with the first beer poured in 1825. Australia's most famous and respected aviator, Charles Kingsford Smith, visited the Cairns township of Queerah in 1932. As the technological advances of the twentieth century made their way to Queensland, Cairns began to develop as a regional holiday destination.
