Just an hour from Cairns, The Great Barrier Reef is a must-see. Over 2000 kms (6561 feet) of coral reef stretches along Queensland's north coast. The rich tropical waters of this World Heritage Area and National Marine Park are home to 400 types of coral, 1500 species of fish and over 4000 types of mollusk.

    Fitzroy Island lies 25 km from Cairns. Take the half an hour catamaran trip to this rainforest island. Snorkeling and scuba diving is conducted from the beach. You can get a look at a quiet corner of the Great Barrier Reef.

    Green Island is one of the most popular coastal destinations outside of Cairns. This 15 hectare Island is a 45 minute cruise from Cairns, take in the wildlife without getting wet, in a glass-bottom boat, or in a semi-submersible. A trip to Green Island can be a mini-holiday, with luxury accommodation available on the island.

    Lizard Island is a flight away. Being 240km from Cairns, resort accommodation hides within this National Park, of 1000 hectares. A glass-bottom boat also operates here, as well as deep-sea fishing expeditions.
