Dragoon Saloon/Good Enough Mine Hosting “1st Annual Burning Down The House Bash Benefit”
“The Fire Department gives so much to the town, they are always on the spot during fires, they do the annual Light Parade, host Santa in the Park and are always there when we need them so this is our way of honoring them,” stated Shirley Dejournett.
Dejournett was talking about the first annual “Burning Down the House Bash Benefit” the proceeds of which will be going to the Tombstone Fire Department. According to Dejournett, they have been planning this benefit for three months and during that time a lot has happened. “It has been an eventful time for the Fire Department in regards to the Six Gun City fire. The fire department did an awesome job and many people don’t realize how close we were to losing the epicenter of our town. The fire department did everything right,” stated Dejournett.
The benefit will be held on New Year’s Day and will have a mix of the old and new. “We are going to hold a Fire of Remembrance by burning an effigy,” stated Dejournett. “I spoke with Chief Grassman and after every fire they have to get rid of the wood left behind, so this year we will be burning the wood from Six Gun City. We have an amphitheatre built, fire fighters will be present and unless there are high winds we will have the fire.
According to Dejournett, she is from Santa Fe were each year they honor the Zozobra Tradition. Each year The Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe stages the burning of Will Shuster’s Zozobra, kicking off the annual Fiestas de Santa Fe on the weekend following Labor Day. Zozobra centers on the ritual burning of the effigy of Old Man Gloom, or Zozobra, to dispel the hardships and travails of the past year.
“This is going to be our way to honor the Fire Department and cast away the negativities of the year,” stated Dejournett.
The benefit will be multi faceted. There will be vendors whose vendor fee will be going to the Fire Department. Eight to ten bands will be donating their time to honor the department. There will be a motorcycle show and their entry fee will also go to the department. On top of that there will be a silent auction, raffles and donation boxes all through the event. “All the money taken in will go to the department, none is going to pay for the event itself,” stated Dejournett.
Music begins at 1pm but other events will be starting earlier. Make sure to stop on by the Dragoon Saloon/Good Enough Mine Tour to help honor the men and women of the Tombstone Fire Department and to bring in the New Year in an upbeat way.
