It took a while, but we finally got the boys’ room done! I was inspired once again by Ana White. When the time came for August to switch to a big boy bed, we decided to put all three boys in the same room. We looked for some time for bunk beds, triple beds, and all different combination of beds to accommodate all three of them in a small space, and we really didn’t find anything that we liked and could afford. So, although what we hoped to be a weekend project took a little longer, we are happy with the results!
We used the plans for the hanging daybed and modified them just a bit. The beds are hanging from the walls with thick rope from metal hooks and also bolted into the wall.
This is Sam’s bed. I cannot remember for the life of me where I found the rock poster, but I ordered it online when we first moved into this house about three years ago. (Kideko!) The bed is about four feet off the ground and has a nice space underneath that I plan on adding to in the future…
The bed linens are from Ikea, including this embroidered map of the world pillow. Neil rigged these outdoor lights to work as battery-powered LED lights that you turn on with a button. I will have to do another post altogether on his amazing work of genius.
August sleeps on the bottom and Jeremiah sleeps on top.
Jeremiah has a ladder and a rope that he can climb to get in bed.
Jeremiah takes art as his elective at school and I framed one of the stamp prints that he made.
The corner under Jeremiah’s bed- table from Ikea, vintage lamp from a garage sale, with some books and a few toys. We store all of our toys in the playroom, although they do get hauled all over the house, it makes it easier to clean up and keep things organized. The boys have book time every day on their beds, so they keep whatever books they want in these baskets.
This is the artwork by August’s bed. A vintage print of the Dumbo book cover, and a piece depicting an Argentinian poem that I grew up with.
And, yes, they have bed rails… The older boys sleep with these and August with this. I was nervous the first few nights about them getting down to go to the bathroom, but we haven’t had any problems!
Even though Neil and I both enjoy projects and have fun building and decorating, it doesn’t compare to the joy of putting the boys to bed at night in the same room… Their voices singing and praying together, their whispers long after the lights go out… and the not-so-whispered demands from the youngest to the oldest for “more song!”
Update: Thanks for your kind comments! To answer some of your questions… The beds are secured into the wall with five inch lag bolts drilled through the frame of the bed and into each of the wall studs. The ropes hang from big eye hooks that are drilled into the wall and into the top of the bed frame. This is a picture of the underside, you can get a better idea how the beds are drilled into the wall. The beds that are stacked are approximately 2 feet off the ground and 6 feet off the ground. We measured to the bottom of the frame, but I am not certain that they turned out exact, we kinda eyeballed it. The beds are heavy! The stool is from Ikea, spray painted with something like this. Even though we put much effort into making sure the beds are secure, we have given the boys strict guidelines as far as safety is concerned. They are not allowed to jump on the beds, jump from one bed to the other, and Jeremiah is not even allowed to sit at the end of his bed, just in case. My husband and I have both climbed up on the beds and they haven’t budged, so they are sturdy, but we do not want them loosening up over time. I will post the wall color tomorrow! More info here…

that is amazing! love it!
I’ve been so curious . . . It looks great. What a fun room for the boys! Beautiful photos, too. Our boys have always shared a room and often times a bed. They wouldn’t dream of splitting up.
Julie
so amazing! Can’t wait to see it in person! I’m thinking a photo shoot of the boys on their beds and hanging out in the picture perfect room!
I found your website through flickr. What a totally awesome boys room! Love the hanging bed. Way cool. Our three boys share a room as well. Love to hear them talking to each other at night in the dark too.
A friend forwarded me your blog through facebook…she thought i would connect with your post about people’s weird comments on having so many young kids…I have three boys under 4 years old. I LOVE this bedroom idea! Mind if I ask how big the room is? I’m wondering how much space we would need to do this. We’re actually moving from Texas to Chicago…sort of the opposite of you guys from what I read on your site! FUNNY!! I’m inspired by your ideas!!!
I am so amazed at your creativity and talent. You have inspired me and your photography is outstanding. Thank you so much for sharing your amazingness with us! Ana
Wowsers! I am so impressed/inspired by these beds! I also have 3 boys in one room and have been racking my brain as to how to house them all and still have floor space. Thanks so much for sharing!
So adorable! What are the heights of the two beds on the same wall?
This room is beautiful. We also have three boys in one room…I’d love to hear more about the LED lights. They have battery-powered clip on lights in their bunks currently, but I think these looks so much nicer!
I saw a pic of your boys’ hanging beds on Ohdeedoh and just had to come over and check out the rest of the room. This is the coolest kids space I’ve ever seen! Excellent job!
I love this! We wanted to do a loft bed for our oldest’s b-day in March (he’ll be 6). This would be so cool! Even if it’s just a reading loft not a sleeping loft.
Do you mind sharing how you secured the beds to the wall? I read Ana’s instructions, but I like how you secured it. If you can post or email it would be awesome! Nice work, and beautiful pictures!!!
Melissa
This room is amazing! I linked to your site from Ohdeedoh earlier. I love the grey and yellow color combination! Would you share the paint color you used?
The paint is Creek Bend by Behr. Thanks for the kind post on Ohdeedoh!
That is SO COOL.
Almost makes me wish I had a boy or two. Or three.
Am loving this space! My husband and I are playing around with the idea of moving all 3 of ours into the same room, but, like your room, it would be a tight fit and we’d have to stack beds somehow. You have made what could be a mess or furniture into a piece of functional art. Amazing!!!
Your boys’ room is fabulous. Gives me pause as we are looking into bunk beds for our two girls (and were considering making Ana White’s). We are in the process of making her King size Farmhouse Bed. Aren’t her plans fabulous?
Beautiful gray on the walls, BTW!
Awesome! I have been playing around with ideas for my youngest son’s room as he has such a small bedroom..wanted to do a loft bed but we have low ceilings…this may just be the answer…How do you have the bed bolted to the wall to prevent movement besides the ropes? Just into studs?
What a wonderful room!! Thanks for the inspiration!
I found you from Ana White’s FB page.
I love this room. Everything about it is so cool. I was wondering how you hung the beds? Lag bolts through the bed and eye hooks and rope in the studs?
Did you make that stool? Also very cute.
I love your blog. I also had 4 kids in 5.5 years, Home school with a 2 day week co-op, and love to surprise my hubby when he goes out of town. Like you, I even made him a little office in a nook in our laundry room one time.
Looks great!
So… how are the backs of the beds connected to the wall? Huge bolts? And the ropes are connected to the wall by big hooks? I so want to do this for my boys, right down to the wall color!
WOW! Truly, amazing! I also have three boys that share a room. They love it that way and wouldn’t dream of changing it. We have a bunk/loft bed and single twin bed set-up in their room and it doesn’t leave much space for anything else. We rent our home now so I don’t think we can do this now, but home ownership will also bring these beds for our boys! Thank you so much for the post and inspiration! I love Knock Off Wood too! I’m taking a lunch break from finishing the painter’s shelf as I speak. 🙂

please oh please what is the paint color? love it!!
WOW, WOW, WOW, WOw, WOW!!!!! This is soo incredible! I mean over the top amazing! Love the hanging beds, and the rope hanging from the ceiling, how much fun! The colors are so stunning too. Fantastic job. I am so inspired by this room. So glad I found your blog!
fantastic.
This is perfect! I have two boys and plan to have a third child! I would love to hear more about how you attached the beds to the walls, ie. bolt sizes and all.
Love the paint color too. Everything about the room is perfect! Thanks for the inspiration and knowing that 3 boys CAN be in the same room, with Style! 🙂
I, too, am curious about how exactly you mounted the bed to the wall to prevent movement. Also, what would you estimate the weight limit to be?
Love. Love. Love this.
It looks beautiful but I would need a fabric bumper or something across the outer edge attached to the ropes to keep my kid from rolling off.
i love love love the boys room! I am looking to find the very gray you used on they’re walls? all the best ,and if I had more than just the one princess girl I would be stealing your fabulous hanging bed idea!

Excellent execution of a cool idea! Wondering how many lag bolts you used to secure the beds to the wall and how they were spaced.. thanks!
WOW–My hubby and I are so inspired by your boys’ room! We were heading out to buy bunk beds, but are seriously thinking about adapting your idea for ourselves. Hope you don’t mind!! I was wondering, did you make the ladders yourself or did you purchase them somewhere?

I was wondering if the boys have trouble making their beds this way? I know in college lofted beds were always a bit of a struggle for some and I was curious how you deal with that with the littler ones? Do you just use a fitted sheet and loose blanket? Thanks!
The boys have a fitted sheet and a flat sheet with a thin throw. They stretch it out as best as they can and I usually help them tuck it under the mattress.

Please do share how the LED lights were made. We have four boys ourselves and they share a room 2 and 2 and would love to add these by their beds. The room is amazing and you have a beautiful family!
What a beautifully put together room! We have 5 boys, 3 of which share a room. I have been dreaming of a fun and safe way to do something similar to this as well…the only thing missing is lockers or storage. I went on the USS Missouri in Pearl Harbor and was SO INSPIRED by the bunks within. Each beds actually lifts up to reveal an under bed storage compartment–even the top bunks! Now to create something with the beauty of your hanging bunks and the utility of the under bed storage….

Love this bedroom! Great ideas!
Found this on Ana White’s website. This room is beautiful. Love mustard/yellows with grey. Such a classic combination.
Oh, I hope you are still answering questions on here!
I just ran across this after searching for shared boys rooms and am in LOVE with this idea! I have 4 boys aged 11.5, 10, 9 and 6.5 and have a baby girl on the way. We have been searching endlessly for a way to house 4 kids in one room and I think your amazing room has finally sparked some ideas for us! We do have a spare room in the basement, but being such a dark, windowless and dingy space, I am reluctant to put the kids down there anytime soon, this idea could work in the big bedroom we have available! Do you by chance know the maximum weight one of these beds could hold? And what size is the room you used approximately? Any building instructions you could possibly forward to me (via email PLEASE) would be lifesaving right now! Thank you so much for inspiring me and showing me it IS possible to get my kids away from space stealing bunk beds!!!!
I am really not sure what the maximum weight limit is- my husband and I have both been up there several times and they do not budge. We are keeping a close eye on the bolts and ropes as the boys gain weight. The bedroom is approximately 12×13. All the building instructions are on Ana White’s website- I linked to it on my post! I would love to see how your beds turn out!
I’m anxious to learn about the lights as well! We live in an old house (one outlet per bedroom!) and I would love to add reading lights by each of the kids’ beds. Like yours, my husband is loath to wire in lights, but I want something that looks nicer than the push-on battery operated versions. I’m tempted to go to Home Depot and try to figure out how you did it!!
AMAZING! I have three boys ages 8, 6 and almost-3, and they would love to share a room (currently the older two share). I count myself lucky that they love each other enough to WANT to share a room … I know you do, too! You have a beautiful family.
Oh wowza! You guys did such a FABULOUS job with this! I love it. Perfect for a boys room. Just perfect! =-D

I love what you did and I have three boys as well. They are 7, 5, & 2. I keep thinking this might be something I’d like to do. But where are all of your kids’ clothing? Do you keep it all in the one closet?
We keep the kids’ everyday clothes in the laundry room in drawers, but their Sunday clothes and pj’s are in the closet. This way of organizing our clothes has reduced so much of my laundry struggle!
I have to admit I have no idea how I stumbled across your blog yesterday but you have truly inspired me. You see we have three boys ages 12, 15, and 17. Currently the younger two share a bedroom with one bed a platform and the other a loft but space is still tight. When I saw your hanging/floating beds I knew we had a winner! Their bedroom is 9′ 9″ x 13′ with a lower ceiling so a traditional bunk/loft just does not work…
Now for a quick question…. how did your husband rewire the outdoor light into battery operated led lights? This is something we definitely want to do! Thank you so very much.
I would love to know how to build these and to see where they’re hanging from.
These are awesome!

I’ve been meaning to comment on this post for a year now to let you know that we did a very similar version for our 3 boys (ages 8,6, and 2). The comments and additional info you provided were so helpful, so thanks so much! Even though we have extra bedrooms and our boys wouldn’t have to share, I loved this idea so much that we put them together anyway and it has worked great. To anyone who is hesitating to put 3 boys together, I promise they get used to sleeping in the same room and you will love them growing up together in close quarters!
As a sidenote, since we now have empty bedrooms, we were able to open our home to a single teen mom and her little guy who need a safe place to stay for awhile. This is something we probably never would have considered if we didn’t have these beds, so I thought I would let you know the part you played in making this happen! 🙂

Thankyou…you have inspired us for our two daughters who share a relatively small room, and would now like something a little more sophisticated! What a lovely room!!!
I LOVE these beds. We are getting ready to build these on Friday for our two girls (5 1/2 and 7)…They are outgrowing their shared full size bed and ready to get them into each their own twin bed. They have an owl themed room and think the bare wood will go great with the outdoorsy woodlands theme. Just wondering 2 years later how everything has held up. My daughter going on top bunk is 7 and 50+lbs and with weight of bed and her it scares me a bit but my hubby says it will be fine. we are also moving ladder to the right corner of bed for added support on the floating corner.
“Three Boys, One Room | The Bumper Crop” ended
up being a superb post. In case it included even more photographs it should be even more effective.
Take care -Kai

Choosing the right bunk bed for your child might be a little more complicated than buying other furniture for your home. When selecting a bunk bed, there are more safety concerns, and you want to please your child in addition to being happy yourself. But, as in any furniture purchase, you should start out by determining your needs.”
