Chechnya

The Chechen Republic (Russian: Чеченская Республика, Chechenskaya Respublika; Chechen: Нохчийн Республика, Noxçiyn Respublika) is a federal subject of Russian Federation. It is located in the southeastern part of Europe in the Northern Caucasus mountains.

After the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Chechen-Ingush ASSR was split into two: the Republic of Ingushetia and the Chechen Republic. The latter proclaimed the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, which sought independence. Following the First Chechen War with Russia, a temporary peace agreement was signed. However, the region became the center of abductions, kidnappings and international terrorists. Thus, in 1999, Russian federal army came back to restore the constitutional order in the republic. Russian federal control was restored during the Second Chechen War. The war finished officially in 2009. Since then there has been a systematic reconstruction and rebuilding process.

Mr Ramzan Kadyrov (son of Akhmad Kadyrov, first President of the Chechen Republic) has been caretaker prime minister between 2005 and 2007, and in 2007 he was appointed a new president. In April 2011, he was elected as the head of Chechen Republic for a new five year terms.
