What could be behind this wall?
Giant kale! The Portuguese grow the biggest kale I’ve ever seen. They eat it as caldo verde, green stew, but sadly I have yet to find it on a restaurant menu.
[Update] By the way, the plants shown here are even taller than they look in this picture, which was taken at a weird angle due to the wall. They were almost as tall as me! Also, I did manage to eat some kale the very evening after I took this picture, at a restaurant just around the corner. We ordered Brasilian feijoada – an intense and wonderful black bean stew with savory chunks of every kind of meat – and to my delight, it was served with a big plate of white rice and kale! The stew was delicious but the kale was the highlight. I wonder if it came from a neighborhood garden like the one shown here…
