DPA 4099 Guitar Mic Review for a Flamenco Guitar

IMG_2008

DPA sent the 4099 Guitar Mic for me to audition. It’s a great mic. It’s a side mount clip on with a mini goose neck for placement. It is not a perminat mouted mic. Great for live performances. The mic itself is a super caritiod mic wich allows for signifacant gain without feedback. The mic ataches to the side of the guitar with a very unique clip. See photos below. It also is very easy to use with a wireless system, I will use it with the Sennhizer Wirless system. I’m very glad to be a DPA artist who uses there mics. I tried the mic in my living room using a second generation Trace Elliot RA 50 R amp. I knotched out a bit on the lower freq. Using the 5 band eq. Then just a bit on lower using the notch filter. Great results so far. Look forward to using the mic on live performances. Will write more in the next few weeks. Initial Impression: Awsome Design and Sound.

I think I like it mounted on the top of the guitar that way my hand can go up the neck w/o bumping into the mic. My only concern is if I will capture more of the bass and have a boomyness to the sound. Will post more later.

  1. Is it possible to bend the neck to get the mic positioned in front of the sound hole? How about feedback when using on stage with other loud instruments (drums for example)?.

    Regards,

    Alain.

    • Hi,

It’s no problem. No ishues as far as stage volume. Some times I notch out a little on the lower side using eq and then no feedback. However at Rock volumes with stage monitors you may have some ishues, you may be able to still do it if you use in ear monitors. Hope that helps.

    • Yep, I have done that.

    • Hi Alain,

The way vie been using the mic is just behind the sound hole around the 14th fret positioned at the sound hole, I’ve hade excellent results with out feedback, the key is knowing what frequencies to cut with an equalizer. I cut the mids about 5-7db at 700 and 400. I try to not play net to a drummer or loud bass amp. In our set up we have gone to in ear monitors. I nave been to some large Flamenco shows where the sound was excellent 600-650 people in the audience. Hope that helps. I am very happy with the DPA it just take a bit of practice with eq’ing

  2. Hi,

Just wondered if you are still using this mic set up? Is it really viable w/o feedback in a small group with percussion?

    • Hi Rob,

I am no longer using this set up, however in regards to using live it would depend on a few things I’m my opinion. 1. What type of music? Jazz, Flamenco, Soft Rock, Blues all ok, Loud Rock and Mettal no especially if drummer is loud. Then room size and how many people are there, For coffee house gigs it’s perfect, small weddings 30-120 people. The isuse’s that you will have to figure out are sound projection, is it loud enough for your purpose, and at higher volumes will you generate feedback.

      • Hi Victor,

Just out of curiousity, what have you switched to for live playing? Also, which guitar support do you have on the DeVoe? Looks like it might be a Gitano.

        thanks for forwarding the replies.

      • Hi Rob,

I’m using a Carvin system, the 1644 mixer with effects and graphic Eq, there 1500wt power amp a d to 15in Speaker cabs, no more wedges for monitors, just in ear monitors, I’ve switched to no support for playing, I just move the guitar around. I find that I don’t like the feel of the support and makes me feel less connected to the guitar, IMHO. I am thinking of getting a small amp but it’s very hard to find o e that I like. I would just like a good mic channel for guitar with phantom power, I don’t use a pitch up and don’t see myself trying anytime soon. So just one or two mic channels, looks like the Fishman Solo may win it’s a bit bigger than I would like.
