This walk from Old Sarum
(Salisbury) to Shapwick (near Wimborne) follows one of the most
exciting stretches of Roman Road in Britain.
As well as the beautiful countryside of the south Wiltshire
Downs, and the impressive Ackling Dyke and Bockerley Dyke, it visits
near it's end Badbury Rings, an impressive Iron Age hill fort.
Relatively easy going, the
journey takes you from Old Sarum, through settlements north of
Salisbury and across the western edges of the city and past it's
racecourse.
|
From here, the perfect
straight course becomes evident, only moving occasionally from it's
course where the original route has been lost and to visit classic
villages, such as Stratford Tony.
Climbing over downland, you
might be fortunate to see hares boxing, or birds of prey hunting.
You will see the impressive Acking Dyke, semi ancient
woodlands more rural villages and Badbury Rings before turning
towards the crossing point of the River Stour at Shapwick.

Day
1. Arrive at Salisbury, a beautiful cathedral city, boasting
the highest spire in Britain. We
walk from Old Sarum, the original city before it moved to it's
current location in 12xx. Our
first day takes us across valley plain, up onto the downs and along
the ancient Acking Dyke. Transport
will be provided to our comfortable lodgings for the night.

Day
2. We will set off from our accommodation by bus to rejoin
the path where we left it on day 1 starting with a visit to the
village of Pentridge, nestled under the heights of Pentridge Knoll.
We rejoin the Roman Road as it cuts it's straight course up
onto Oakley Down, ending the day in the village of Gussage All
Saints.

Day
3. Having returned to Gussage, the road cuts between fields
towards Badbury Rings. We
will have time to explore the impressive ramparts before following
the path westerly toward the village of Shapwick where you will be
collected and transported back to Salisbury by bus, ready to return
to your homes or, perhaps, choose to extend your stay.
