“It doesn’t matter how slowly you go-so long as you do not stop.”-Confucius

Well, I had to actually slow down this morning to contemplate this quote. By nature I’m a neurotic multi-tasker who whips through the day at Mach speed. But, I’ve noticed, this can be to my disadvantage.

Just last night I spent literally 1.5 hours ordering Free business cards (courtesy of VistaPrint.) It was not a complicated process, although I tend to over think things, get distracted and go off on tangents. Maybe I have a touch of A.D.D. or maybe I’m too overloaded that my weary brain is saying, s-l-o-w down and browse your surroundings a bit. Whether in the literal sense or the Google bar sense.

I have to say, I did not feel rested with all that browsing. I felt miserable. Headachy, stressed, overwhelmed miserable.

I should have been working on my essay entry for the contest which is due Friday. I should have updated my class list’s email addresses. I should have researched children’s markets for a “green” filler I’ve been trying to place.

Some days I just feel like I’m spinning my wheels and not getting any further. However, on other days I can conquer my to-do list by leaps and bounds! So long as I just don’t stop moving, right?

So, are you a wheel spinner or steady as she/he goes writer? How do you make it work?

  1. Ah, the coulda’s woulda’s shoulda’s. Been there. I definitely have the highest of high peaks and lowly valleys. I think what Dori said in Finding Nemo is useful: ‘just keep swimming.’ As long as I have a sense of where I’m heading, writing wise or not, I don’t mind the little ‘detours’ along the way. Happy writing, my dear!

Thank you for the reminder. I actually use that line with my boys when they’re about to give up! “Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, swimming, swimming!”
Or tread water – just stay afloat!

  3. Mary Jo,
I just wanted to say that I just checked out your blog and think it’s really awesome! Thanks for all the great posts!

  4. Thanks, Sarah! With blogging you never really know who stops by and it can feel like “writing in a vacuum.”
Glad to know my tapping keys and humming brain are reaching fellow writers!
Hope you visit again and again!

  5. I know what you mean. I recently started my own blog…and “feeling like you’re ‘writing in a vacuum'” is a great way of putting it 🙂 I must admit that I was totally excited to see a comment posted. Thanks for checking it out!

  6. Your the kind of writer I like and would like to be- take it easy.

  7. It’s difficult to measure progress. Not stopping isn’t necessarily the same as moving forward, yet moving forward isn’t always progress. My challenge is to figure out what I mean by progress. Your post has me thinking about this. Thanks.

hi, would you tell me the quote “It doesn’t matter how slowly you go-so long as you do not stop.” belongs to which chapter in Confucius’s Analects? I have read over the book but didn’t find any similar lines

    Thanks very much!

  9. Woooww… jst passing by… very inspiring quote.

  10. Actually I came on this blog, by actually typing the quote in google. That is because just before typing it in google, i got some kind of enlightenment, that i should slow down. And after slowing down I realized that I am making much fewer mistakes while typing, and i can read whole articles or blogs or whatever with a peace of mind, and guess what, that actually saves you time and you can focus on what you are doing. And the best thing is that you dont feel tired. So that is more work, in less time and much lesser stress levels.

So I just wanted to see, if I am the only one who was having this problem of rushing through things unnecessarily or are there any others of my kind as well.

Well fortunately, I am not alone. I feel better now. :p
    And ya, nice article. 🙂

A nice lady. It remains to determine – is there any sense at all to rush anywhere

  14. This has become my motto for writing. I’m still at school so finding the time to write is difficult, but as long as I don’t stop, I’m still going 🙂
And your blog looks epic! Follow button has been clicked!
