Lantern Festivals

Yee Peng is an annual Thai festival held to celebrate the full moon the day preceeding Loy Krathong in the northenThai capital Chiang Mai. Wish Lanterns, or ‘Khoom Fay’ in Thai, are traditionally released en masse as part of the celebrations, to stunning effect. The word “Yee Peng” refers to the full moon of the 12th lunar month of the Buddhist calendar.

Pingxi lantern festival takes place near Taipei in Taiwan to mark the Chinese New Year. Lanterns are traditionally released to symbolise wishes of happiness, wealth and luck for the New Year. Coloured wish lanterns represent different wishes depending on their colour.
