EXPECT MAJOR DELAYS ON I-66 EAST AT I-495
WEEKEND OF AUG. 27
Traffic reduced to one lane from Nutley Street to Beltway

ALEXANDRIA -- Two of three lanes of eastbound I-66 will close between Nutley Street and I-495 beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, August 27 until 5 a.m. Monday, August 30, as crews prepare to shift traffic to the new I-66 bridges over the beltway.  Motorists should expect overnight temporary stoppages after midnight lasting no longer than 30 minutes. The Virginia Department of Transportation encourages motorists to consider planning alternate routes to avoid major delays.

In addition to the two lanes closed on I-66 east, the following ramps will also be closed:
•I-66 East to I-495 north via the right-hand general purpose ramp
•All Nutley Street on ramps to I-66 east
I-66 eastbound access to the Vienna Metro Station and the left HOV exit to I-495 north will remain open throughout the weekend. Motorists can expect delays up to one hour during peak travel times on Saturday, August 28 and Sunday, August 29, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., from Route 50 to just past the work zone.
By 5 a.m. Monday morning, all I-66 east lanes will be shifted to the new bridges over I-495.  HOV motorists traveling in the left lane on I-66 east heading to Arlington/Washington D.C. will need to merge to the right lane prior to I-495 north to continue toward Washington, D.C.

Monday morning, August 30 to Tuesday morning, August 31
The left HOV exit on I-66 east to I-495 north will close at 9:30 a.m. Monday, August 30 until 5 a.m. Tuesday, August 31 for crews to complete the exit ramp merge from the new bridges. Once open on Tuesday morning, motorists are encouraged to use caution on the new left HOV exit. The configuration is expected to be in place for the next year.

I'm guessing they already started this westbound. Coming home from the game tonight, thankfully my exit is Sycamore St. As I got off, I noticed it appeared both lanes were shut down and they were having everyone either get off at that exit or drive on the shoulder. This was the first night this week I didn't just get off at Glebe Road. So looks like they are shifting from West to East now.

Freaking lovely all the delays this **** is causing, 90% of which is for the pay lanes on 495 that I will never use or want to use on principle. The Mixing Bowl was one thing, and although a nightmare it was tolerable since it was 100% for improvements we all would use, and was needed. This 495 cluster, as someone who lives in Falls Church in the heart of it, is just... A cluster. The 66 bridges *these* closures are for are one of the only positive things we get out of the whole mess.

  • Hell yes!
I live near Fairfax, and work in Rockville.  Normally, the summer is easy in terms of traffic as school closures and vacations siphon just enough cars off the roads to make things work.  This summer though, traffic has really sucked.  Toll road ramp and lane closures, Beltway construction mess and lane shifts, what summer relief?  Now, we head back into the school year.  I can't wait.    :(
