Hypnotic Donuts

Have you ever heard of Voodoo Doughnuts from Portland, Oregon? I saw them featured once on Food Network on one of their hotspot countdowns and thought their doughnuts looked over the top yet strangely delicious. While thumbing through D magazine last month, I came across the Dallas equivalent-- Hypnotic Donuts which operates only Saturday and Sunday in a pizza shop. That's right, a pizza shop. They don't have a sign advertising that there are donuts inside but they have a website and a facebook page that tells whether or not they'll be open and what kind of special donuts will be on the menu. They only accept cash and there are no donuts in a case to peruse over-- they only decorate them by hand after you've ordered them which means you'll have to wait a bit, but they're worth it.

The D magazine told us that they're open only from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and that they sell out of donuts fast so it was a mad rush last Saturday to get the kids loaded up and out the door to make the half hour drive over to The Pizza Guy pizza shop where Hypnotic Donuts likes to hide on the weekends. When we got there, they were all out of white cake donuts which made me sad because I really wanted to try the Lucy in the Sky with Lemons which is a white cake donut with lemon frosting, crushed lemon heads and white chocolate.

Troy and I decided to try the Reverse Oreo which is a glazed donut with chocolate frosting topped with large chunks of Oreo cookie, the Roof of the Mouth which is a chocolate cake donut with chocolate frosting and large chunks of Reeses Peanut Butter Cups (wholly rich-ness!), the Morning Breath (my favorite) which was a chocolate cake donut with chocolate frosting and covered in Junior Mints and a Turtle donut which was a chocolate cake donut with chocolate and caramel frosting and chocolate and caramel drizzle. We also got the kids a Homer which is a glazed donut with strawberry frosting and loaded with sprinkles on top.

They also make biscuits as well and they are even bigger than the donuts and have interesting yet tasty combos. Troy fetched himself one called Maribeth's Just Born Bonus which was a biscuit with fried chicken, tater tots and peppered white gravy. He inhaled that thing in about 5 minutes!
So needless to say, we'll return again for sure with cash in hand ready to wait for our crazy combo donuts! Let us know if you want to visit-- we'll take you there! :)

P.S. I can't remember if you've ever been to Ham and Eggs in Lewisville. If not, look it up. Troy will die.

umm ... yeah... I'll take you up on that offer! We'll be up in March. Let's plan on it! I am sorry that you are sick. But I admire you being sick and STILL blogging! Hope you feel better soon!

Aimee, definitely! When are you guys coming by in March?

Aidan, yeah, Jeremy took Troy to Ham & Eggs back when he was scouting the area for places to live and stayed with you guys (I was still in NOLA). I think you had a migraine at the time so it was just the boys. Troy really liked it! I still need to try it too. :)

Oh, mike has the same superman jammies Troy had on. Gotta love the superhero clothing :)
