WINNIPEG, MB – The Chicago Dogs (7-5) avoided a series sweep Thursday afternoon, defeating the Winnipeg Goldeyes 4-3 at Blue Cross Park. Box Score The Goldeyes (5-8) held a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth inning when catcher Nick Dalesandro hit a three-run home run down the right field line to give Chicago a two-run advantage. Shortstop Andy Armstrong pulled Winnipeg within one in the bottom of the ninth with a two-out double to right-centre field that brought catcher Rob Emery in to score. However, Joey Marciano (S, 4) got second baseman Adam Hall to pop out to right field to end the ballgame. Right fielder Ryan Holgate opened the scoring in the fifth inning when he hit a solo home run off the right field foul pole to give the Goldeyes a 1-0 lead. In the sixth, Winnipeg increased their lead to 2-0 after designated hitter Max Murphy hit a sharp single to right field that brought third baseman Dayson Croes in to score. Goldeyes starter Joey Matulovich took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, but Chicago first baseman Jacob Teter hit a solo home run to right-centre with two out to spoil it. Matulovich took a tough no decision after going seven innings and allowing one run on one hit and striking out eight. Steven Lacey (W, 2-0) gave up two runs on seven hits in eight innings of work to earn the victory. Brady Schanuel (L, 0-1) was charged with the loss, having surrendered three runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning. “It was a good game, a good series, and something to build off of,” said Goldeyes manager Logan Watkins . “We would have liked to get Joey the win today just because he deserved it, but that’s baseball.” Winnipeg will open a three-game weekend series against the Lake Country DockHounds Friday at 7:00 p.m. CDT. Landen Bourassa (0-1, 3.27 ERA) will start for the Goldeyes, while fellow right-hander Duncan Snider (2-0, 2.54 ERA) gets the call for Lake Country. WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes secured their first series win of the season Wednesday evening with a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Dogs at Blue Cross Park. Box Score The Goldeyes (5-7) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when designated hitter Adam Hall came in to score on right fielder Max Murphy’ s groundout to shortstop. Chicago (6-5) tied the game in the top of the fifth on shortstop Pavin Parks’ single to centre field that fell in just out of the reach of a diving Miles Simington . Left fielder General McArthur IV scored on the play. Winnipeg retook the lead an inning later when Dogs starter Kenny Serwa was called for a balk with Hall standing at third base. Goldeyes starter Zac Reininger (W, 1-2) did not allow an earned run in six innings of work and surrendered just three hits. He struck out five and walked one. Ryder Yakel , Tasker Strobel , and Justin Courtney (S, 1) each pitched an inning of scoreless relief, not giving up a hit in the process. Serwa (L, 0-1) threw a complete game for Chicago, yielding two earned runs on six hits while striking out six. It was unfortunate for him (Reininger) being 0-2 on the year going into today because he’s thrown well enough to win both of his starts,” Goldeyes manager Logan Watkins said following the game. “I’m glad that we ended up scoring a run after he was going to be coming out of the game to get him the win because he deserved it.” The series concludes Thursday at 11:00 a.m. CDT when Goldeyes right-hander Joey Matulovich (1-0, 4.09 ERA) matches up against Dogs southpaw Steven Lacey (1-0, 0.75 ERA). Trevor Curl will have the pregame show on CJNU 93.7 FM and cjnu.ca at 10:30. The game will also be streamed free of charge at AABaseball.TV . WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes won their 2024 Home Opener Tuesday evening, defeating the Chicago Dogs 6-1 at Blue Cross Park. Box Score Winnipeg (4-7) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when right fielder Max Murphy doubled to left-centre field, driving in designated hitter Adam Hall and third baseman Dayson Croes. A fourth inning solo home run to left field off the bat of centre-fielder Johnni Turbo pulled the Dogs (5-5) within one. The Goldeyes used a long ball of their own to get that run back in the bottom of the fifth as Hall led off with a 364-foot shot to right field that made the score Winnipeg 3 Chicago 1. Centre fielder Miles Simington drew a bases-loaded free pass in the seventh inning that forced in shortstop Andy Armstrong to make it 4-1. The Goldeyes added two more runs in the eighth to put the game out of reach. First left fielder Ryan Holgate singled to right field bringing second baseman Jake McMurray in to score. Then pinch runner Keshawn Lynch came home on a squeeze bunt by Armstrong giving Winnipeg a five-run advantage. Colton Eastman (W, 2-1) picked up his second victory in as many starts, surrendering one run on three hits in 6.2 innings. Nick Troglrlic-Iverson (S, 2) worked the final seven outs and allowed a pair of doubles. Jason Bilous (L, 1-1) gave up three runs – all earned – on six hits over six innings of work. He struck out seven. "I know a lot of the fans were excited for the home opener and I'm glad we could give them a win," Goldeyes manager Logan Watkins commented following the game. "You have to give a lot of credit to Colton Eastman who threw great, and Nick Trogrlic-Iverson brought us home. Offensively we kept putting pressure on them every inning. It felt like some out there, but at the end of the day, a 6-1 win is a good first game here at home." The three-game series continues Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. CDT when righty Zac Reininger (0-2, 6.00 ERA) starts for Winnipeg against Chicago’s Kenny Serwa (0-0, 3.37 ERA). Trevor Curl will have the pregame show on CJNU 93.7 FM and cjnu.ca at 6:00. The game will also be streamed free of charge at AABaseball.TV .
