About Alistair Miller & AMTV

A brief history of myself and Archive of Rallying.

I’m the fourth son of a farmer; I served my time as an Engineer in three different factories, three different Colleges and qualified in Mechanical Engineering becoming a Field Service engineer and trouble-shooter to Weir Pumps in the late sixties. Early seventies I worked in the copper mines in Zambia where I achieved possibly my most satisfying job, single handed I repaired a German made multistage submersible pump supplying all the mines water, which saved the shutdown of the Bwana Mkubwa Mine near Ndola. I went on to Australia and worked in Garden Island Dockyard in Sydney and having diagnosed successfully the malfunction of their main turbine in an Aircraft Carrier I achieved certain notoriety and attained foremanship. On returning to Scotland I worked for my brother Robert in his used car business but opinions differed so I set up my own Garage business repairing some of the most exotic of cars imaginable and doing an average of three thousand MOTs per year.

I was working in parallel to my business, training as a Cameraman and my hobby of rallying, being president of the local car club and running events in Scotland. I got to know Jim McRae very well and when his son Colin became seventeen Jim asked if I could supply Colin’s first car which I did, it was a Ford Capri. By 1986 my camerawork took over from the garage businesses and I gave up both my garages and made sure my 16 employees were kept safe in their employ.

From 1984 I was supplying Barry Hinchliffe my material from the British Open Rally Championship with a deal that paid me well per round, plus expenses and I was able to retain my original tapes. I learned a lot from Barry and his editors working together in London on the TV coverage. I did do a few World events with him and as I was making programmes for BBC Wales, Scotland, Ireland and Sky we eventually parted company in the late 90’s.

I was freelancing for all the major broadcasters and very busy, whilst filming rallying was taking up more and more of my time. In Scotland I set up a Media Club and the drivers would pay me per event and I would feature them in the Sky and Asian TV programmes which I supplied, this enabled me to scale down my freelancing opportunities and to concentrate on Motorsport.

In 2001 Foot and Mouth hit the UK, and rallying ground to a halt, so with two commissions from the BBC already in the bag I invented the UK Rally Challenge, hired Knockhill Racing Circuit raised enough sponsorship to create link roads and made a 6 mile stage which we ran in various configurations. A full entry from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland and running it twice that year to fulfil my BBC obligations was very successful.

I have the most comprehensive and unique Professional Archive of Rallying in the UK with a few World events thrown in and at present I’ve converted all the tapes to a 4TB Hard Drive excluding the in-car. With over 90 boxes of tapes and nearly 40 years of professional work I would like to sell the whole lot including the original rushes and copyrights. The price I’m asking per cloned HDD is £5k and the release date will be the 14th February 2024. Each HDD will be numbered and when the limited editions are met the archive will no longer be available.
