In a Fifth Avenue apartment high above Central Park, art dealer Flanders Kittredge and his wife Ouisa are trying to interest a moneyed friend in a $2 million investment. When an unexpected young guest arrives, claiming to be the son of Sidney Poitier, the plot takes some wonderfully unexpected turns in John Guare’s classic American play. Also starring Gabrielle Carteris and Chuma Hunter-Gault. Includes a conversation about “six degrees” theory with mathematician Steven Strogatz of Cornell University.
We speak with veteran journalist Peter Maass about the Israeli war on Gaza and his new opinion piece for The Washington Post headlined “I’m Jewish, and I’ve covered wars. I know war crimes when I see them.” Maass, who was a senior editor at The Intercept until earlier this year, has spent decades covering wars, including the Bosnian genocide in the 1990s that killed about 100,000 people over nearly four years. He says many of the same war crimes he reported then are part of Israel’s current assault, including sniper attacks on civilians, bombing of civilian infrastructure, attacks on bread lines and besieging whole populations by preventing food and other aid from entering. “What seems to be unfolding in Gaza is even worse than what I saw in Bosnia,” says Maass.
The Western corporate media is failing in its coverage of Israel’s war on Gaza, says Palestinian independent journalist Dalia Hatuqa. “A lot of what’s missing from the bigger portrait … is the Palestinian voice,” says Hatuqa, who applauds local journalists in Gaza for providing the world a crucial window into what’s happening there while international reporters are blocked by Israel from entering the territory. “Nobody knows Gaza better than the Gazan journalists on the ground.” Hatuqa also speaks about her latest piece for The Century Foundation about rising Israeli state and settler violence in the occupied West Bank, which she says can accurately be described as pogroms. “The fog of war has allowed Israel to perpetuate crimes at a very large scale, not only throughout the West Bank, but including occupied East Jerusalem.”

After a number of quick news headline since our previous BradCast last week, it's on to the biggest story of the day: the first day of the first criminal trial of a former U.S. President. Weeks of chaos and violence in Haiti may be coming to an end as an agreement for a transitional government is drawn up this week.
Responding to the on-going genocide, activists and advocates of Palestinian rights are planning to set sail on a number of ships carrying aid directly to the people of Gaza as part of a Freedom Flotilla Coalition.

Dam removal on California's rivers is a highly visible and inspiring recognition of the benefits of natural services provided by healthy ecosystems.
Tracker picks up where we left off last week looking at the removal of the dam on the Matilija River in Ventura County, as she reviews and reports on the progress of LA River rewilding.
We discuss the role of tribal communities and efforts led by women to restore and rebalance, in light of Governor Newsom's recent announcement supporting removal of three additional dams in the state alongside ongoing efforts to free the Klamath.

Pacifica National Board Motions on Terms for Those Elected in 2023 Elections
Whereas there were insufficient funds to hold elections in 2022, which was year 2 of Pacifica’s 3-year election cycle in which half of the delegates would be elected;
Whereas the PNB passed a motion on October 20, 2022 providing that delegates whose terms would have ended in 2022 would continue to serve in 2023 if Pacifica failed to hold elections;
Whereas delegates whose terms would have ended in 2022 were either in their first term and therefore eligible to run again, or in their second term and therefore ineligible to run again, according to the Pacifica bylaws, and the delay from 2022 to 2023 in holding elections does not change that eligibility status;
Whereas Pacifica is in the midst of the election cycle for 2023, with the record period having passed, the period for candidate nomination having closed, the ballots not yet sent to members, and ballots slated to be sent to voters in the second half of August; and
Whereas it is important for voters to understand before they cast their votes the length of terms to which successful candidates would be elected and serve;
Therefore be it resolved that all candidates running in the 2023 delegate elections are running for two-year terms, and that the elections.pacifica.org website and the ballot shall reflect this information. Pacifica elections would return to the Article Four, Section 3 schedule of holding elections in years one and two and no elections in year three (i.e., elections in 2024 and 2025 but not in 2026).
