Apparently this is a pretty darn good place from everyone that was in my party. Oh, my opinion of the place? Well as I'm not really big on eating Chinese food (does Panda Express count?) it's hard for me to get exciting about this place so I have to base a lot of my review on what others in my groups said (most of the food I ate, some I didn't).
I guess above all the Garlic Lobster that we had was everyone's favorite. The lobster was infused with a great portion of garlic and the garlic seasoning on top of the dish was so amazing, that we scooped it off and put it on our rice to eat with the rest of our dinner. The second best thing would probably have to be dessert - Lychee sorbet - which tasted exactly like lychee and was very light and refreshing.
The portioning and the plating of our nine course meal was great for the eight of us that were there. The really big dishes they left on our table to share family style while the smaller ones they plated for us on smaller plates and served us. The service here was exceptional. Never needed to ask for refills for any of our drinks and they were quick with everything. When I mentioned at our table that I wasn't partial to seafood, our server brought out the next dish for me, which was our beef dish, just so that I could eat.
It was a group concensus that this place was pretty good and a shame because it was a Saturday night and there was hardly anyone there.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Ryan H.Dundee, IL19824054Jan 17, 2011
It has easily been a good 15 years since I last dined at Lau Yee Chai.
The restaurant itself hasn't changed one bit, other than the hours have been drastically cut, probably due to the economy and their somewhat odd location situated at the top floor of a small shopping plaza.
At this point in time, they only serve lunch during the week. No dinner service is offered at all.
The restaurant itself is mammoth. They could easily seat several hundred patrons and in their hey day, probably did.
The lunch special that is offered is a Set Lunch for about $8pp. Salad, entree, rice, almond pudding for dessert.
The flavors were outstanding; the portions disappointingly small. Within a couple hours, I was jonesing for some more food.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Clifford L.San Francisco, CA5925219Aug 18, 2010Updated review

The place is vast, kine remines us of movie set for Curse of the Yellow Flower!!
My favrit is the Sai Hoo Opp (E.Lake [boneless/stuffed] braised duck) -
and, everthang else! -except they tend to have their Air/Con on HK super HI, which cools off your food by the time it gets to your table!

Hands down this is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in the world! Lazy Susans on the table to make sure everything gets shared. And everything is worth sharing. Great for family gatherings. I've been going to this place more years than I care to admit and never once have I been even the slightest bit disappointed. If it's authentic they have it. Service is superb. Not an eat and run kind of place. This is a sit-down, stuff your face, white table cloth, unfasten your belt, give me some more . . . please, kind of place. They've been around for a long time because they are just downright good at feeding folks.

This place is enough to gag a maggot. I broke a freaking tooth on some kind of hard noodle in the chicken salad. Food tastes like it was prepared in the toilet. I guess the people who wrote positive reviews are freinds of the owners cuz this is just another clip joint with crap food

pros...great place to have a wedding banquet, i did. the service was great and the food was awesome. where can you go with 15 of your favorite wedding guests (small wedding) two hours after your wedding? the menu had the required 9 courses, soups, appetizers, cold plate, whole fish, veggies, meat, chicken, pork and beef dishes and dessert. there was so much food the guests all had little to go bags with their favorite dishes inside. it pays to go on the off season, we had the whole restaurant pretty much to ourselves..about 6-10 other tables. they even sections off our party, wow, a whole 2 big round tables. i love lazy susans on the tables. all in all a great place to have lunch or dinner on a regular day. and they boast that they have the most beautiful chinese restaurant in the world, not sure about that. but what ever you're in hawaii.
cons...had to fly to hawaii.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dillin T.Morgan Hill, CA02May 9, 2010
Place was closed on a Saturday night. Security guard told us it' s for large party/banquet/weddings. Can't say much about the food because we didn't have any.
