BIOGRAPHY

Born into a musical family, Greg has been surrounded by music from an early age. Originally a clarinet and saxophone player, Greg took up lessons on Drum Kit aged 15 before taking his love of music to the University of Southampton where he majored in percussion performance and orchestral conducting. Now a talented multi-instrumentalist, Greg works as Instrumental Lead for Percussion, Lead for Rock and Pop and World Music specialist for Hampshire Music Service.

CONDUCTING

When not playing percussion, Greg holds the post of Director of Music of the Band of the Hampshire Constabulary and Principal Director of Music with the 14th Eastleigh Scout and Guide Band ("The Spitfires"). He also deputises for other local amateur and professional groups and ensembles.

PERFORMING

Greg is also in high demand as a player, performing with various ensembles from small function bands and big bands to full orchestras, wind and brass bands. He can often be seen at St Mary's Stadium with 'Saints Brass', playing Sousaphone and drums with the funk brass outfit 'Tuba Libres', and playing percussion with various bands and orchestras. His versatility and reading ability leads to a lot of deputising work, with regular appearances with various military and brass bands. Greg is a Vic Firth endorsed artist.

ARRANGING

When not playing or conducting, Greg can often be found at the computer arranging music for large and small ensembles, with his arrangements being played all over the UK and the USA (and even recent appearances on BBC and SKY television).

"Greg Walker is one of the most talented musicians that I have ever had the pleasure of working with. He is clearly very passionate about music in general but especially with regard to his own output and he is very determined to always perform at his best; he consistently plays at a very high standard and in many contrasting styles, all with apparent ease.  As a conductor, I find him to be an ideal Band member - he knows what to practice and does so effectively, he pro-actively prepares himself and his section thoroughly for every rehearsal and concert and having done so, he then ensures that he (and they) deliver an enthusiastic and high quality performance.  He is also a very effective arranger, conductor and teacher and it's this all round ability combined with his immense musicality and professionalism that makes him the effective musician and performer he is - Greg would be a valuable asset to any Band or organisation and I simply cannot rate him highly enough."

Conductor, Composer & Arranger

"I have known Greg professionally for nearly ten years as we have worked together many times not just playing along side him in the Hampshire Constabulary Band but also whilst I was WO1 Bandmaster of The Army Medical Services Band. Whenever I require a percussionist his name is always at the top the list as I know I will receive a faultless performance along with commitment and dedication at the highest level. I recently asked him at short notice to take part in a major concert without rehearsal, he totally sight read the whole programme without fault something he should be very be proud of.

A totally professional musician and very likeable character it has been a real joy working with him and I will certainly continue to call on his services when required."

"Greg has always done a superb job for me when playing kit with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. He’s a great listener, plays with dynamic sensitivity and is always watching! His reading and feel are both excellent - I know the concert’s in good hands when he’s there."
