Hello, Peter Snow here

This is your chance to step into my shoes and play around with opinion poll findings to see what effect they would have on the House of Commons.

2001 VOTE SHARE
Labour: 41%
Conservative: 32%
Liberal Democrats: 18%
Others: 9%

Enter figures for parties' national vote shares in the boxes to the left, then click "calculate results".

You will see a realistic predicted outcome based on the UK's first-past-the-post electoral system. Parties with equal votes will not win the same number of seats.

It is best to fill in all the boxes, but not necessary. Any box you leave blank will remain unchanged from the 2001 position.

The calculator works best with realistic figures. If they do not add up to 100%, they are rescaled automatically.

You can also input vote share movements. If you enter +5, for example, that party will gain 5% on its 2001 vote share, although you should balance it by entering -5 for another party.

Hitting the fine tune button allows you to take into account tactical voting. Use the links to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to calculate the impact of different vote shares for parties in those areas.

Have fun!
