ScotRail's coasting trains plan 'will save fuel'

Help

ScotRail has identified downhill sections of track where drivers can put the engine into neutral with some trains "coasting" for miles.

On the Glasgow to Aberdeen line a section of the journey is done without the usual level of fuel. When the train approaches Gleneagles, the engine is switched to economy mode for about 15 miles into Perth.

Drivers have long done coasting on some routes, but it has not until now been an established part or timetabling or training.
