Cultural Culinary Olympics in Erfurt Germany

Filed under: gastronomy — dekeersmaeker @ 2:44 pm

After the Book Fair I’m visiting the ‘Culinary Olympics’ at Erfurt in Thuringen, about 2,5h by train From Frankfurt.

Good food seems a tradition in Thuringia. Even Goethe knows that he was inspired by culinary art.

‘Culinary Olympics’ is the world’s largest culinary exhibition, a cooking competition with this year the participation of 52 nations and about 1600 cooks .

Visiting the presentations of the National Culinary Teams, Individual Exhibitors and National Culinary Teams Military, one cannot avoid to combine some of the plate presentations with typical cultural issues of the participating countries.

Some examples:

This presentation reminds me of the ‘Art Nouveau’ period of the Czech Republic at the early 20th century. At that time the country was part of the Austrian Hungarian Empire.

In this little masterpiece (my opinion) one can find the calligraphical signature of the United Arab Emirates

The panoramic ship of Heviz, about 5km northwest from the Balaton Lake, reminds me at this place well known for the healing thermal waters of the famous Lake.

This young cook Marco Squizatto from Camposampiero in Padua, Italy, created ‘War and Peace’ in chocolate. A philosophical approach of the Culinary Olympics.  The sculpturing part he learned from an artisan in his hometown. The sculpture he made during the night. During the day he has to work in a restaurant.

Another picture of the little guy picking the flower in his hand while saying: War/Peace.

The ‘Snake Charmers Charm’ is another masterpiece in chocolate from the USA I find.

Just enjoy like I did. And if you are realy interested in the medals the participated countries wins till October the 22th just go to the Olymiade der Köche, the homepage

‘Project to study the Silk Routes’

In the eight century, Omanis had sailed the Indian Ocean to Canton in China, and to East Africa.

With the participation of many scientists from different nations and organised by the Unesco and the government of Oman the Royal yacht Fulk AlSalama started in 1990 from Venice, Italy, on 25th October and reached Osaka in Japan on March 3rd 1991, with stops at several ports on the way.

This book, a compilation of papers and with themes like ‘The Influence of Trade Routes relating to Oman in ancient times,’ or, ‘Oman’s Role in the Maritime Silk Route. Human, Commercial and Navigational Factors towards a Maritieme Achievement,’ gives some inside details that makes the reconstruction of this journey and in general the Silk Route more vivid and interesting not only from historical and cultural point of view.

Socialising on the Frankfurter Book Fair

Filed under: Book Fair News — dekeersmaeker @ 4:26 pm

Well Folks, today I had meetings with the public, (very interesting),

with some interesting collegues,

and also a day of interesting speeches.

Because this Book Fair is also presenting China, India and the Arab World.

So today I’m a little bit exhausted, when you know that the Fair had yesterday, Friday, 53.146 visitors. Only publishers. Because now, during the weekend, the Fair is also open to the public. And to be honest it was croweded, overcrowded.

So tomorrow I bring you four books that I find interesting. Not an easy task to do. Because this Fair gathers 7.373 stands. German exhibitors form the largest group, followed by the British and the USA.

How digitisation is changing the publishing world part II

Filed under: Book Fair News — dekeersmaeker @ 2:39 pm

E-books on the rise

A book is an e-book is a computer game is a film is a website

It’s all about the content.

For several years, more than 30 per cent of the products exhibited at the Frankfurt Book Fair have been digital.

The selection of digital products presented by the publishing industry is on the rise.

At this Bookfair 361 exhibitors include e-books in their assortment. New at the Bookfair this year are the book communities, internetmarketplaces and mobile applications such as the collective stand Books&Bytes who provides an overview of everything new with regards to books and the internet.

With the hype around the new generation of reading devices such as Kindle, iLiad and the Sony Reader, a lot of market growth is expected, especially in the education and fiction genres.

Paulo Coelho, the Brazilian author and guest at the Fair, put it this way:

“For fifteen years, as a media form, the book has proven unsurpassable. Of course, e-books are slowly claiming ground and it’s likely that, in due time, the digital form may override papaer. But this will take a few more years, which gives is-publishers, booksellers and writers – a precious moment before the Web makes its move. Yet what I saw as a writer came as a surpirise, and a lack of understanding of the Web on the part of the industry. Instead of seeing in this new media an opportunity to invent new ways of promotion, publishers concentrated on creatin micro sites, which are totally outdated, and a few of them complained about the ‘misfortunes’ of the other cultural industries, perceiving the Web as the ‘enemy.’ This is probably the same attitude the copyist monks had with regards to printed books back in the 16th century. Yet, given that book as media are still widely used, why not share the whole digital content of books for free? I was lucky enough to see this hapenning to my books in Russia, back in 1999, where I had a very difficult beginning. Given the great distances, my books were very poorly distributed and the Sales were very low. Yet, with the appearance of a pirated digital copy of ‘The Alchemist,’ that later on I included on my official website, sales took off in an amazing way. To this day, I have reached the mark of over 100 million books in this territory.”

Exciting times are coming up, I’m looking forward

How will digitisation shape the future of publishing?

Filed under: Book Fair News — dekeersmaeker @ 3:28 pm

My book the ‘Earth has Fever,’ ‘Die Erde hat Fieber,’ ‘De Aarde heeft koorts,’ is published as a ‘Book on Demand’ and as ‘E-Book.’ Because I believe very strong that digitisation will shape the future of publishing.

The organisers of the Frankfurter Book Fair have conducted a major survey to find out how digitisation will influence the future of the publishing industry, and who will be the thriving force behind it.

Over 1000 industry professionals from over 30 countries responded to the survey, issued via the Frankfurt Book Fair Newsletter.

The most interesting results:

China’s digital influence in international publishing predicted to increase threefold in next five years

Consumers, Amazon, Google believed to drive the digitisation process

online bookselling named as most important development of the past 60 years

As the much-hyped e-readers hit the stores, and digitisation continues to revolutionise all aspects of the book trade, this year over 70 per cent of respondents revealed that they feel ready for the digital challenge. The survey also reveals that current opinion is divided on the future of the e-books and digital content to overtake traditional book sales as early as 2018, whereas a third predict that this will never happen.

The industry predicted, however, that consumer attitudes would evolve-with over half thinking that Internet users will be more willing to pay for digital contenct in five years time than now.

Interesting not?

Frankfurter Bookfair

Filed under: My novel news — dekeersmaeker @ 4:03 pm

Hey folks me on the run to the Frankfurter Book Fair, to the way of the launching of my first Novel.

To be honest it’s exciting.

And you know what this photo is taken by a Russian lady I met in the station. We talked a lot about the book.

It’s interesting how such a little book as mine with the tilte ‘The Earth has Fever’ or ‘Die Erde hat Fieber,’  makes people talk about there interest in deling with the climate change. Also on the train there were some interesting discussions going on. And that’s good I think.

3.50 hours later am in the Book Fair. And there my book is, healthy and well. Waiting for the audience and other publishers who are interested to look at it. What a surprise?

All the five books were opened, not in the plastic anymore. People already like to read inside, the publisher BOD told me.

Ok tomorrow I see myself. Because it’s almost closing time now.

Tomorrow you can expect other bookfair new, because In Frankfurt the International world is gathered.

My first novel is arrived

Filed under: My novel news — dekeersmaeker @ 12:33 pm

It are exciting times for me.

Within 3 days my FIRST NOVEL ‘The Earth has Fever,’ Die Erde hat Fieber’ is launched in Frankfurt on the International Book Fair.

After four years of research everywhere around in Europe, the history I had in my mind is now available as a Book on Demand.

To hold your first born book into your hands is a very thrilling moment, more a holy moment. Suddenly you see your words, your thoughts, your phantasie in black and white in a paperback format. Very convenient.

And then you realise that your world has changed. The things you have written down in private are suddenly common good. But to be honest it feels good.

Now the book can life his own life. Readers will like it or not.

Hopefully you enjoy the story like I did while writing it.

Synopsis

The ‘Sky Disc of Nebra’, a bronze disc 30 cm in diameter depicting the oldest known image of the cosmos, is a clue running through the story of Arthur Tempo and Alice Buton who along with fifty climate refugees have mysteriously disappeared from the face of the Earth.

For climatologist, philosopher and lobbyist, Hilari Sands and his team of scientists, this mystery turns into a puzzle. During their research which takes them all across Europe they are confronted with one shocking revelation after the other. A mysterious group and a fifteenth-century bishop are the basis of a unique spectacle with a surprising denouement.
