Saving Audie: A Pit Bull Puppy Gets a Second Chance Hardcover – May 10, 2011

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 52 ratings

When Michael Vick's dog fighting ring was discovered, more than forty dogs were rescued. But their struggle was far from over. Most animal advocates believed the former fighting dogs were too damaged to save, but Audie and his kennel mates would prove them wrong when public outcry and the publicity surrounding Michael Vick's punishment won them a chance at a happy life. Teaming up once again with William Muñoz, photo-essay veteran Dorothy Hinshaw Patent gives an emotional account of one dog's heartwarming story, showing how Audie, who was only a puppy when he was rescued, was rehabilitated, adopted, and now enjoys the love he deserves.

From the Author

While the events leading up to the rescue of Michael Vick's victims were terrible, the stories that followed are filled with hope, determination, and love on the part of both the dogs and the amazing people who have devoted so much time and effort on the animals' behalf.  I felt honored to meet Audie and his family and to experience his new loving and exciting world by his side.  I'm a sucker when it comes to dogs, and Audie won my heart right off the bat.  When my photographer, Bill, and I first arrived at the house, Audie barked and barked, then ran away, turned and barked again and ran away.  He just wasn't sure what to do about this strangers.  But within a half hour, he lay next to me on the couch, his head resting against my thigh as he slept, trusting me completely.  Who wouldn't fall in love?

Great book but written from young adults not really an adult book but I enjoyed it and liked the information it provided. Glad to see someone writing about something good that came out of this. Micheal Vick and others like him need to be put away in a cold dark prison cell because if you do this to a dog then you will take the next step and do this to a person.

I am so grateful for this child friendly book about this horrific story with a happy ending. I will be using it in my humane education classes with my pups, Mayor Puppypants and Kermit the Dog. :) <3 The MANY lessons in this book cover so much, and thankfully serve as a voice for all abused dogs, and esp the pit bull who gets tortured AND blamed by humans and is the number 1 dog dying in shelters because of it. The author does a brilliant job of explaining everything. I got a lump in my throat and then a great idea to contact my dog trainer about us doing a combo class of her training with my humane ed on compassion and kindness to animals. This is a MUST for ALL teachers, animal educators and pet parents.

Saving Audie is a wonderful continuation for the Vick pit bulls who survived their living hell and have found their one true family. This book is for younger children with the fantastic photographs and story, BUT everyone should read this about Audie! I had an adult friend read it and she just kept saying wow, with a smile on her face! A great nonfiction title I plan to use in my library for the students who love dogs and the life skills kids. I heard about this book at the Philadelphia ISTE conference---keep spreading the good word about these resilient dogs that just want owners who love them. Lots of great facts, visit the blog too!

“Saving Audie" is a very positive way to show readers that everyone deserves a second chance—dogs and people alike—and that love, respect, and support have the power to transform lives. It also opens people’s eyes to the fact that "pit pull" dogs aren’t the villains that some people and communities have made them into.

Audie is one of the "Vicktory Dogs" formerly owned by Michael Vick. Like all the Vick dogs, Audi is an individual and a delightful dog and family member who will surprise you and change the way see "pit bull" dogs forever! No matter what age you are, read it.

We just literally rescued a pit-bull puppy several months ago. The poor little guy had been taken from its mother waaaay to early, was in a bad home situation, and had "fallen" on its head. When we found out about it, we rushed him to the Vet, who told us the puppy had little chaance of survival but they would see what they could do. Well, 3 months later the puppy is a wonderful addition to our family, now a strapping 40 pounds and stiil growing!. This book, although a different scenario than ours, gives hope for abused animals.

This is a terrific book. Plus it's a book you can share with your younger child.
It's not long, technical or complicated.
It just goes to show Pit Bulls are NOT mean or vicious.
The ones like that did NOT start out like that. The people who own them made them that way!
Anybody who does this to dogs should be hung out to dry!!!!
Thank Goodness for the Wonderful people who got Vick's dogs!!
Puppy dogs are unconditional love wrapped in fur
BTW~~I call my dogs "puppies" no matter their age b/c they are my babies!

I bought this book for my 10 year old son since we have a rescued pit bull and he loves to read. He loved it and told me about it from front to back. I also read it and was touched by this dog's story and those who went to great lengths to give these dogs a second chance at life. With all the negative hype out there about pit bulls this really gives a different perspective on the nature of these wonderful dogs. They are loyal, affectionate, and love children. Great read for kids and adults.
