Reasons to visit Andalucía
Andalucía is arguably the most quintessential region of Spain. Birthplace of flamenco and home of bullfighting, fiestas and troubadours, it has a rich and peculiar past that has left a legacy of Islamic mezquitas, Catholic churches, vast palaces, breathtaking cities and a cuisine that blends African spices with seafood, cured meats and fresh produce. These all make an appearance as tapas, the perfect bite-sized accompaniment for rich red wines, icy beers and fortified sherry from Jerez, drunk locally as an aperitif!
This fascinating region incorporates the southernmost tip of the Iberian peninsula, stretching westwards from the sand and pebble beaches of the Granada province to the border with Portugal. Famous for its sun-kissed beaches and cultural cities, the pervasive backdrop of the rugged Sierra Nevada Mountains boasts the highest point in Spain at 3,479m (11,414 feet).
Mild winters, warm dry summers (guaranteed!) and a laid-back lifestyle are a natural draw for visitors. Add the allure of grand cities of Seville, Cordoba and Granada, Moorish monuments and timeless whitewashed mountain villages and you begin to understand Andalucía's appeal. While some visitors enjoy beaches, booze and nightlife, others seek out cultural attractions, golf courses and a cuisine that simply must be enjoyed alfresco at a leisurely pace. Tapas and drinks can be savoured slowly throughout the evening, sitting by the pool or listening to gentle waves beneath a starry sky.
