Blog Tour: Under a Summer Skye by Sue Moorcroft (includes UK giveaway)

Thea Wynter and her sister Ezzie live a quiet life working at a big house on the Isle of Skye. Thea used to be a bit of a celebrity, appearing on TV in a popular gardening show. Now, she has been very happy to leave that world behind. She loves being a gardener and chooses to not have any social media at all.

Dev Dowie makes his way to Skye to try and find Thea. His business and marriage have both gone bust and he has been reduced to writing tawdry Where Are They Now type articles. He meets Thea when she comes up across him rescuing a puppy. He very quickly decides that he does not want to write the story so does what he can to get out of it.

Thea and her sisters are all adopted and a chance meeting changes everything that she thought she knew about her story. The question is does she want to find the truth now or is it safer to leave sleeping dogs lie. And does she want to take a chance with Dev? And can you really leave the past behind, especially when someone else has a different agenda?

I have read a few Sue Moorcroft books over the last year or so and she is now on my radar for every new release. And when I found out that her latest book was going to be set on the Isle of Skye there was no doubt that I wanted to read it, and not just because we are going to be visiting the island on our Scottish tour in a couple of months time.

I enjoyed the island setting of this book, as well as side trip to Brittany!

This is the first book in a trilogy, which presumably will focus on each of the three sisters. Interestingly, this is the second book about adopted women finding their true identity I have read in a row!

Thanks to the publisher, Netgalley and Rachel's Random Resources for the review copy. I am sharing this review with the New Release Challenge hosted at The Chocolate Lady's Book Review blog.

Rating 4/5

About the book

Under a Summer Skye

A Scottish island. A stranger from the mainland. A summer of possibilities…

Escape to the Isle of Skye this summer with the Sunday Times bestselling author, and lose yourself in the first book of the Skye Sisters Trilogy.

A chance encounter is about to change everything for Thea Wynter.

The moment she arrived on the Isle of Skye, life changed for Thea. Running from a succession of wrong turns, she comes to the island in search of blue sea, endless skies, and mountains that make the heart soar. Here, she feels at peace.

As head gardener at Rothach Hall, life is exactly how she wants it, with her days spent working in the glorious clifftop garden and her evenings in the cosy village pub.

But an encounter with a stranger from the mainland brings with it an unexpected turn – and she is left wondering whether he is friend or foe.

It seems that even on Skye, life can catch up with you, and Thea is soon faced with the past she left behind – and with it, the family she’s never met…

From old lives to new beginnings, lose yourself on the beautiful Isle of Skye with Thea as she discovers how many possibilities life can truly hold if you look hard enough.

Top Ten Tuesday: Books I Was Super Excited About But Still Haven't Read

Welcome to this week's edition of Top Ten Tuesday which is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week's theme is Books I Was Super Excited to Get My Hands on but Still Haven’t Read. And yes, I am sticking to the script this week. It isn't always the case

Daisy and Kate by Meredith Appleyard
- I first saw the cover for this at a reader retreat last year and wanted to read it straight away....but still haven't!

The Other Bridget by Rachael Johns - I bought this as soon as it came out in book form, as opposed to on Kindle, but still haven't read it.

The Missing Sister by Lucinda Riley - I listened to all the previous Seven Sisters books, but the idea of listening to a book 30 hours long is very intimidating right now as I don't get to listen that much anymore. And then I have the next book after that as well

Midnight Blue by Simone van der Vlugt - I had to have this book as soon as I saw it!

The Diamond Eye by Kate Quinn - What am I waiting for? Yeah, I don't know either

The Last Bookshop in London by Madeline Martin - I could also mention this author's subsequent books too.

Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Bookshop by Hwang Bo-Reum - I have had this on my radar since last year.

The Starfish Sisters by Barbara O'Neal - I have quite a few unread books by this author

An Astronomer in Love by Antoine Laurain - Maybe I'll get to read this for Paris in July.

The Air Raid Book Club by Annie Lyons -  I like the sound of this author's upcoming book too.

Have you read any of these books?

This Week....

I'm reading

Phew! Last week feels like quite an achievement. I had committed to reviewing four books on two days which was a bit crazy! And I managed to get them all read and reviewed. Last week, I finished reading A New Dawn at Owl's Lodge by Jessica Redland. I then started and finished the second book in the Shakespeare Sisters series,  The Secret Daughter of Venice, by Juliet Greenwood.

This week I have just one book scheduled for review which I am reading at the moment. That book is Under a Summer Skye by Sue Moorcroft. We are visiting Skye for a day later this year so it seems like a good time to read it!

I may actually be able to pick up something for fun this week. We'll see.

I'm watching

I have once again fallen with the dreaded lurgy. I was therefore feeling very average so on Friday afternoon I logged off from work early and just sat in the chair and watch all the available episodes of Bridgerton season 3. Definitely comfort viewing.

We also watched the first 2 episodes of Girls 5 Eva after two people at work recommended it independently of each other! I am not sure if we will continue or not.

We are still watching each new episode of Wrexham as it comes out, and of course still watching various Bake Offs and Masterchef with each new episode.

I did start watching a documentary series on Legendary Cities, which is interesting. The first episode was about Amsterdam and the second about London. I think it might be a French series that has had the narrative re-recorded in English.

Life

I seem to be having a bit of a bad run when it comes to health issues. Nearly everyone in our house is feeling unwell at the moment. Turns out it is Covid. Bleugh!!

Fortunately, I did get to go and see Bonnie Garmus on Tuesday night before I started feeling ill. I wrote about that experience for my latest Weekend Cooking post.

Our thoughts are turning to holidays. It is just under 10 weeks until we go away, and I think just about everything has been booked that can be. My thoughts have also turned to a potential destination for April 2026. Is it too soon to be planning that far out?

Weekend Cooking: Bonnie Garmus

This week I was lucky enough to go to an event at Melbourne Town Hall where "global phenomenon" Bonnie Garmus was the guest author. This was a very popular event with around 2000 people in attendance.

In case this name doesn't ring any bells, Garmus is the author of the hugely successful novel Lessons in Chemistry. I read the book and watched the TV series last year.

Now, full disclosure, the food aspect of Lessons in Chemistry was barely even mentioned, which was a bit disappointing, but I thought I would still share. I do wonder if the session had been a bit longer this topic would have come up. Given how popular the session clearly was, I do wonder why it couldn't have been longer than an hour, but I guess that they had to allow enough time for the book signing as well.

The main focus of the conversation related to the feminist themes in the book. The author talked about how she wrote the first chapter after a particular day at work where she experience discrimination in the workplace. After a meeting where her work waspresented by a man as his own, she was dismissed and told to go back to her desk and finish a menial task. Instead, she went back to her desk feeling incredibly angry and bashed out the first chapter of the book that would in time become Lessons in Chemistry.

Along the way she touched on a few different interesting topics. When asked what her mother, who was a nurse, would have thought about the book she said she wouldn't liked the swearing or the fact that Elizabeth is an atheist. When asked what her kids thought about it, she mentioned that they didn't really realise that the book was a big deal until Garmus went to a huge event and was described as a global phenomenon, and from that point on that is what they had her down as in their contacts on the phone.

Garmus also talked about that whilst it might feel like Lessons in Chemistry came out of nowhere, it isn't actually the first book that she had written. She had a previous book which was 700 pages long, which no publishers would touch. And interestingly, before she even started, she had already written part of a story where Maddie Zott was the main character, but as a grown up. She talked about how that  made it easier to write the child version of Maddie because she already knew who Maddie grew up to be.

Another story that Garmus shared was about signing with her agent, Felicity Blunt. She told a story of being somewhat embarassed when she was talking to Blunt, who mentioned that her husband is an actor and her response was a somewhat dismissive question of "would I have heard of him". Given that Felicity Blunt is the sister of actress Emily Blunt and is married to Stanley Tucci, chances are that the answer is yes!

Whilst I was surprised that they didn't talk about the role of food in the novel there is no way that we could have gone through the whole conversation without mentioning Six-Thirty the dog. Appparently the presence of the dog was a source of contention between the author and Felicity Blunt. Luckily she won the battle, as it is difficult to imagine Lessons in Chemistry without the dog being present.

There is much more that I could share but hopefully this is a good taste of the conversation.

One thing I thought I would mention that at each of the last two author events I have been to, there have been hardcover  special editions available that are absolutely gorgeous. Here is the cover for Lessons in Chemistry. I didn't end up buying it but it was definitely tempting.

I am also sharing this post with Sunday Salon hosted at Readerbuzz.

Blog Tour: A New Dawn at Owl's Lodge by Jessica Redland

Zara is looking for where she fits in. She knows that it isn't with her family who have always overlooked her in favour of her soccer star brother. Right now, it is with her friend Amber and her new love Barney, but she know that it probably isn't sustainable. After all, Amber is both her boss, and her friend, so if anything changes for Amber it will also change for her.

When Zara finds an injured owl, she ends up taking it to a local owl shelter owned by Snowy who is also a disgraced former Olympic gymnast. Snowy is less than friendly. He has chosen to hide away on his farm, even going so far as homeschooling and coaching his son Harrison as a gymnast. Withdrawing from the world was the right decision at the time, Snowy is beginning to realise that maybe it is time that Harrison needs to go out into the wider world.

Zara is very interesting in the owl sanctuary and even offers to include some footage in the wildlife programme that she works on, but he is determined to protect his privacy. But Snowy does begin to let some of his barriers with Zara, very slowly at first. She is drawn to Snowy the man, and to the owl sanctuary, and last but not least to the full gymnasium that Snowy has on his property. Back in the day, Zara had some potential as a gymnast but unfortunately her mother decided that all her efforts needed to be focussed on her brother.

Gradually, Zara begins to think about what her life might look like and whether there is space in it of Snowy, Harrison and his grandfather Pops. And for Snowy, he needs to think about whether he has the capacity to expand his world beyond the invisible walls he has kept around his world for so long.

I really enjoyed a lot of the elements in this book. The information about the owls was very interesting, as was the gymnastics. There was a much deeper through the book as well, around alcoholism and grief and I though that the various different parts were definitely very well balanced.

I had been thinking about reading Jessica Redland for a while now. I chose to read this as a standalone novel but there are a lot of throwbacks to previous books. It didn't stop me from enjoying the book but I did wish that I knew.

Thanks to the publisher, Netgalley and Rachel's Random Resources for the review copy. I am sharing this review with the New Release Challenge hosted at The Chocolate Lady's Book Review Blog and British Isles Friday at Joy's Book Blog.

About the book

A New Dawn at Owl’s Lodge

Could one chance meeting change your life forever?

Zara is at a crossroads in life. While she adores her job as a producer's assistant working on hit TV shows, travelling around the country means she doesn't truly feel that she has a home. With a fractured relationship with her family and unrequited love weighing heavily on her heart, she is torn about what her next step in life should be...

Snowy is hiding from the world. He's devoted his life to home schooling his young son and caring for sick owls at his home, Owl's Lodge, deep in the Yorkshire Wolds countryside. While he's passionate about both, it's a lonely existence and he's starting to question his decisions. But how do you step back into a world you've pushed away for years...?

When Zara brings an injured owl to Owl's Lodge, its frosty, reclusive owner is far from welcoming. Despite hostilities, there's a connection that neither could ever have prepared themselves for. As they discover a shared passion, a new friendship blossoms, but both Zara and Snowy are used to shutting people out.

Can they both find the courage to open up and the strength to move on from their pasts? And what could this mean for their future happiness?

Blog Tour: A Wedding in the Sun by Leonie Mack

Do you ever feel like anything that can go wrong will? For Jo and Adrian it feels a lot like that. First, the two, who don't like each other at all after an unfortunate run in about Christmas in the PTA, are stuck on the same plane. And then they find themselves on the wrong side of the Pyrenees. They should be in Spain at the wedding of their exes, providing emotional support to their kids but instead they are  diverted to France.

When the mishaps keep on coming, Adrian and Jo are thrown together more and more, and they start to realise that maybe the other person isn't too bad. But it's a bad idea to fall for your exes new partners ex. Try saying that quickly twice

I have read a number of Leonie Mack books now and I love them. With all the things going wrong, it could feel madcap, but it doesn't really. Along the way we visit Lourdes, as well as the southern coast of Spain, with a side of history around Spanish guitars.

This is another great read from Leonie Mack. Bring on the next one!

Thanks to the publisher, Netgalley and Rachel's Random Resources for the review copy. I am sharing this review with the New Release Challenge hosted at The Chocolate Lady's Book Reviews.

About the book

A Wedding in the Sun

Four exes and a wedding. And a road trip no one expected…

Jo Watters would rather do anything than go to her ex-husband Ben’s wedding to perfect Monica, and if it wasn't for her beloved children she would already be far, far away. But having promised to be civilised for the sake of their soon-to-be-blended family she is headed to Spain with a fixed smile and hoping for a very fixed drink!

But when Jo realises that she’s on the same plane as Monica's ex-husband, the devastatingly handsome but equally cantankerous Adrián, she thinks her trip can’t get any worse... she’s wrong. When bad weather forces the plane to land the wrong side of the Pyrenees, and the hotel they’re sent to only has one double room available Jo begins to wish she was anywhere - anywhere - but here...

Determined to get to the wedding however they can, Jo and Adrián make an unlikely team, but as their disastrous trip continues, Jo starts to wonder if fate has other ideas for her and Adrián, especially when he seems to be getting more handsome by the day…maybe this trip won't be so terrible after all?

Blog Tour: Come Fly with Me by Helen Rolfe

I hadn't read Helen Rolfe before, but as soon as I saw the description I knew that this was a book that I wanted to read. I mean, I don't think I have ever read a book where the heroine is the pilot of a air ambulance helicopter in the countryside of England.

Maya loves her job as a helicopter pilot. What she doesn't love is that ex husband Conrad, still seems to have a hold over her, no matter how much she tells him that it is over. When he is injured in a motorcycle acccident, this is just one more opportunity to have Maya at his beck and call. She knows what he is doing but she feels as though she has to maintain the relationship in order to protect her son Isaac.

Noah has just moved into the town. His life was turned upside down when he found out that his recently deceased sister has appointed him as guardian of her daughter. Not only does he have to start a new job, he has to work out how to look after a baby. And being attracted to Maya is definitely not part of the plan.

This book has lots of layers and I really enjoyed it. I look forward to reading more from The Skylarks. The scene is set for a really interesting series.

Thanks to the publisher, Netgalley and Rachel's Random Resources for the review copy. I have shared this review with the New Release Challenge hosted by The Chocolate Lady's Review blog and British Isle Friday hosted at Joy's Book Blog.

About the book

Come Fly With Me

Take to the skies in this gorgeous and gripping new series, perfect for fans of Jo Bartlett and Cathy Bramley.

A Second Chance…

For Maya, serving as a pilot in the Whistlestop River air ambulance team is a dream come true. And now, with her divorce from her overbearing husband finally complete, flying over the fields of Dorset, and saving lives with the Skylarks, is the centre of her world. If only her ex would accept their separation as readily as she had, life would be perfect…

A fresh start…

Having recently transferred from London to Dorset, paramedic Noah is ready for a new start. But he’s brought with him a lot of baggage, not least his infant niece who he’s been looking after since his sister died unexpectedly earlier that year. Noah adores Eva, but is he really cut out to look after a baby?

A risk worth taking?

When Noah and Maya find themselves on the same rescue team, they’re immediately drawn to each other. Yet, with so many complications in their personal lives, do they have time to open their hearts to someone new?

As their friendship grows, Noah and Maya are both about to discover that life is worth nothing unless you share it with the people you love.

Blog Tour: The Secret Daughter of Venice by Juliet Greenwood (includes UK giveaway)

Kate Arden has always known that she wasn't really an Arden. She had a vague memory of a life before she came to live at Brierley. Those memories are on the periphery of her brain, slight glimpses but nothing solid to grasp on to.

She also knows that she needs to get away from her home. She loves Brierley, with it's grand but crumbling house, the Roman mosaics that are just waiting to be further uncovered, and her three sisters, Rosalind, Cordelia and Bianca. But her father is domineering, determined to marry one of his daughters off to a wealthy member of the aristocracy. It actually doesn't matter which one of them really. More than anything though, she needs to pursue her passion for art.

When her Mama passed away she left each of her daughters an illustrated book of Shakespeare with the hint that there is a clue in the book for each of them.

Kate has looked through her book and could see no clues, until one day, she does find something. She finds an image of a terrace with a mountain in the background, which is something similar to one of the memories she has.  She also finds a picture of Venice.  What could it possibly mean?

And so Kate begins to follow a trail of clues that lead her first to Birmingham where she helps out a charity that is involved with children who have been orphaned during the war, to St Ives in Cornwall and then to Italy. Can this trail of clues help her to find out what or who she is looking for.

This is a dual storyline book, not timeline, but storyline. Whilst we follow Kate as she tries to work out what her story is, we are also following Sofia who has returned to Italy after many years of living in America. She is also searching for her true self, for the facts about what happened many years ago which prompted her to run away to America.

This book is the second book in the Shakespeare Sisters series by Juliet Greenwood. Because I don't like to read a series out of order I actually read the first book, The Shakespeare Sisters, a few weeks ago. From a timeline perspective, The Shakespeare Sisters was set in the years leading up to WWII and the in the years after the war. This book is more firmly set in WWII and it's aftermath.

I really liked both of these books, and will definitely read the next Shakespeare Sisters novel whenever it comes out. I liked the descriptions of the various locations from Cornwall to Venice and to the Bay of Naples.

Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and Rachel's Random Resources for the review copy of this book. I am sharing this link with the New Release Challenge hosted by The Chocolate Lady's Book Review blog and with the Historical Fiction Reading Challenge which I host

About the book

The Secret Daughter of Venice

The paper is stiff and brittle with age as Kate unfolds it with trembling hands. She gasps at the pencil sketch of a rippling waterway, lined by tall buildings, curving towards the dome of a cathedral. She feels a connection deep in her heart. Venice.

England, 1941. When Kate Arden discovers a secret stash of drawings hidden in the pages of an old volume of poetry given to her as a baby, her breath catches. All her life, she has felt like an outsider in her aristocratic adoptive family, who refuse to answer any questions about her past. But the drawings spark a forgotten memory: a long journey by boat… warm arms that held her tight, and then let go.

Could these pictures unlock the secret of who she is? Why her mother left her? With war raging around the continent, she will brave everything to find out…

A gripping, emotional historical novel of love and art that will captivate fans of The Venice SketchbookThe Woman on the Bridge and The Nightingale.

About the author

Juliet Greenwood is a historical novelist published by Storm Publishing. Her previous novel, The Last Train from Paris, was published to rave reviews and reached the top 100 kindle chart in the USA. She has long been inspired by the histories of the women in her family, and in particular with how strong-minded and independent women have overcome the limitations imposed on them by the constraints of their time, and the way generations of women hold families and communities together in times of crisis, including during WW2.

After graduating in English from Lancaster University and Kings College, London, Juliet worked on a variety of jobs to support her ambition to be a full-time writer. These ranged from running a craft stall at Covent Garden to running a small charity working with disadvantaged children, and collecting oral histories of traditional villages before they are lost forever. She finally achieved her dream of becoming a published author following a debilitating viral illness, with her first novel being a finalist for The People’s Book Prize and her first two novels reaching #4 and #5 in the UK Kindle store.

Juliet now lives in a traditional quarryman’s cottage in Snowdonia, North Wales, set between the mountains and the sea, with an overgrown garden (good for insects!) and a surprisingly successful grapevine. She can be found dog walking in all weathers working on the plot for her next novel, camera to hand.
