First look at Bexhill-on-Sea windshelter finalists

The AJ can exclusively reveal the designs by the ten shortlisted practices in the Bexhill-on-Sea windshelter and kiosk contest

The RIBA’s Competition office is hosting a special web-exhibition showcasing all the entries - displayed anonymously - in the contest, dubbed ‘Next Wave’. Responses will then be presented to the judging panel, chaired by Niall McLaughlin.

Selected from more than 140 entrants, John Pardey Architects and Duggan Morris Architects are among the finalists who have been asked to draw up separate schemes for a kiosk and four seafront shelters for the East Sussex resort with a total construction value of £220,000.

Jury chair Niall McLaughlin said: ‘The competition attracted a very high number of entries and provided a really broad range of responses to the site.

‘The shortlisted schemes managed to combine original thinking with a properly considered approach to this challenging seafront environment. We are delighted that we have a range of interesting ideas to take forward to the next stage.’

The finalist have until 21 October to work up their stage one ideas. Stage two will involve a web-based public consultation followed by a final judging session in mid-November.
