2024 Cannes Critics’ Panel: Rasoulof's The Seed of the Sacred Fig Tops Our Grid

And finally, it came down to the wire for not one, but two films that disrupted what had been the top-ranked film among our Cannes Critics’ Panel members. Jacques Audiard's Emilia Pérez initially reigned supreme, joined shortly by Sean Baker's Anora. However, it wasn’t until films #20 and #21 that we solidified our top three films and confirmed our number one. The buzz title of the fest (via some some secret industry market screenings), and eventually the top film according to our jury of twenty, went to The Seed of the Sacred Fig. After three Un Certain Regard showcases, Mohammad Rasoulof's latest (and first time in competition) film reigned supreme with an average score of 3.7. Not far off the gold mark, we find Payal Kapadia's All We Imagine as Light securing the second-place spot with an average of 3.5. Tied at 3.4 are Jacques Emilia Pérez and Anora. Four films followed tied at the 3.0 mark in Michel Hazanavicius' The Most Precious of Cargoes, Andrea Arnold's Bird, Paul Schrader's Oh, Canada and Jia Zhangke's Caught by the Tides.   Miguel Gomes' Grand Tour and Ali Abbasi's The Apprentice both missed out from landing a top tier score tallying up with a 2.9. Magnus von Horn's The Girl with the Needle was also appreciated by some with a 2.8. This is followed by 2.6 scores for Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis and Yorgos Lanthimos' Kinds of Kindness. Films that had some supporters but required a bit more love to float higher included David Cronenberg's The Shrouds, Karim Aïnouz's Motel Destino and Paolo Sorrentino's Parthenope. All tied at 2.4 we found Kirill Serebrennikov's Limonov: The Ballad, Christophe Honoré's Marcello Mio, Emanuel Pârvu's Three Kilometres to the End of the World and Agathe Riedinger's Wild Diamond, with Coralie Fargeat's The Substance going solo with 2.3. And finally the film that had no business being in the comp (a surprise Netflix selection), was Gilles Lellouche's L'Amour Ouf with a 1.6 tally. Click on the grid below for a larger version!
