Critically endangered orcas in B.C. are struggling to navigate in a sea of shipping noise

Our need for transportation and shipping is causing a kind of pollution that’s invisible (and in this case, inaudible) to humans. What does all this noise mean for the 75 or so Southern Resident Killer Whales left in existence?

L 87 “Onyx” who is a member of the southern resident killer whale population L87 in the shipping lanes.  At the time this picture was taken, their population numbered approximately 84 animals and is now is down to 74. Animals crosses pass with a container ship and Boundary Pass around the US/Canadian border. a busy route for both the whales and shipping traffic on its way to the port of Vancouver. 2016-08-09
