As we near the end of our April big block features, we can’t help but wonder why the Ford Motor Company made several different engines in one-cubic-inch increments between 1963 and 1969. Sure, there were racing rulebooks and different applications that factored into the decision, but the issue has vexed those far wiser than us. What we can do is spell out, in some detail, the differences between the old FE series and the 385-series motors that began replacing them in 1968 with the introduction of the 429 in the Thunderbird.
