MASS IN BLUE

The centrepiece of our Summer concert is Will Todd’s Mass in Blue, a setting in a jazz idiom of the Catholic Mass, first performed in 2003 and now a modern choral classic, popular with choirs and their audiences alike in the UK and abroad. We are delighted to be joined by four talented young musicians from the jazz department of the Royal Academy of Music: Vocalist Maddie Martin and the LJ Jazz Trio - Lewis James piano, Guy Dempsey bass and Luke McCarthy drums.

Music by three other contemporary composers completes the programme: Alec Roth's Stargazer, four charming partsongs linked by the theme of contemplation of the starry night sky; Ērik Ešenvald’s Northern Lights, where the voices of the choir are joined by the otherworldly sounds of tuned wine glasses and chimes evoking the ethereal dance of the Aurora Borealis, and a second modern classic: Jonathan Dove’s The Passing of the Year, with Stephen Ridge playing the virtuosic piano accompaniment
